Why do people hate Nickelback so much?

Asked by bostonbeliever (386points) November 3rd, 2011

It seems like it’s people just really love to trash Nickelback. They’re not my favorite band, by any means, but I don’t think they’re terrible. What is it about them that inspires such hatred?

The way the main singer sounds like he has throat cancer, the way their lyrics are generic and boring, the way the music itself consists mostly of power chords and doesn’t hint at much talent.

I don’t hate them, but I certainly find them to be very mediocre.

It’s popular to hate on certain musicians more than others for whatever reason.
I don’t like them myself but I wouldn’t waste my precious moments on earth telling everyone about a group I don’t like.

Their vocals are crap, and their music is awful. Plain and simple.

Because people love to talk crap about other people. :/ But I really love Nickelback, good band.

Well I think the west coast and east coast are really vocal in their taste of music. And east coast and west coast love progressive sounds. Nickelback I think, personally, attracts middle America. I’m not knocking on middle America, but I think the tough voice, hard guitar hard drums still sells to that crowd. Where areas editors and reviewers in the west coast and east coast love to listen to new sounds, like whatever hipsters are into and whatever hip hoppers are into. It’s just the way its been.

Because they are just o.k. – and have become very popular – so they must die. People form an opinion about something – and most things run the vanilla route. But would you read it if someone wrote: hmmm, they are just okay?

@zensky They aren’t really that popular, not when compared to superstars like Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. Everyone knows who they are, but I can’t think of one person who lists them as their favorite band, or who would go to their concerts (that isn’t someone who goes to all the concerts, regardless of who’s playing). People don’t wear Nickelback shirts the way they do with Pink Floyd, or Led Zepplin, or the Stones… Nickelback is just really “fine”, except that they’ve somehow become a rallying point for those who aren’t fine with “fine”, so they get demonized as “the worst thing ever”. The vocals are crap, fine, but so are the vocals on tons and tons of popular artists, and they aren’t more crap than all the other bands out there (looking at you, Red Hot Chili Peppers). So it is strange that Nickelback gets all this backlash when others who are just as bad or worse do not.

I’ve never really understood the hate, either. Their music is very similar to other music people claim to like, so I don’t get it. I think they’re fine.

I like Nickelack. But there are just so many bands, singers and whatnot, that have better music and better talent. It also depends on personal preferences. The show biz gig is too competitive, and for stars to actually rise into fame, they have to achieve much more than just ‘concerts’ and ‘singing’, they have to fit in with what their fans, or most people like in order to gain attention.

@tom_g AHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH. Is this like a brownie or real poop?

For me it’s because I do not like them at all. When I listen to tunes in the car, I will try to avoid their music. However, I often find more than two satellite stations I listen to playing the same Nickelback song at the same moment…then will turn to the radio and there they are again. Annoying!

Due to that guy’s voice, it’s not like you can just ignore one of their songs when it comes on :/

@SpatzieLover I can ignore his voice. It sounds like all the other voices on the radio.
