The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is to decimate their list of inductees to fifteen says rebbel; Who, according to you, must be on that exclusive list?

Asked by rebbel (35549points) February 15th, 2012

“The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, ......., is dedicated to recording the history of some of the best-known and most influential musicians, bands, producers, and others that have in some major way influenced the music industry, particularly in the area of rock and roll.[”
Wiki + list of inductees

There is only room for fifteen rock legends.
(That means we’ll have a list of only fifteen persons and/opr bands).
Who is the most influential, most important rock band, – singer male or female and should definitely get a place on the list of fifteen (coughcough Elvis)?
And can you name one that shouldn’t have been on the original list in the first place?

I am not clear on what the question is. Are you suggesting that there only be 15 people or bands in the Hall of Fame?

Going to edit my question asap, thank you Marina!

The Doors should not be on the list IMHO.

The Beetles should be on it.

Chuck Berry
Talking Heads
Carl Perkins
The Beatles
Bob Dylan
The Rolling Stones
The Kinks
Johnny Cash
David Bowie
The Velvet Underground
Eric Clapton
Ramones
The Clash
Blondie
The Stooges

It is no coincidence that many of the proto punk and punk bands that have made the Hall are on my short list.

I worked on this for a bit, and really slashed the hell out of the list, cutting it to a bare bones, gotta be on it list. I still had 43.
I retailored it, omitting anyone who was folk, funk, soul, jazz, or blues, so that it was just rock and roll. So long Dylan, Steely Dan, Supremes, Stevie Wonder, and a bunch more. I still had 32.
I cut those who were great, but really didn’t have a terrific influence on music. So long Talking Heads, Blondie, and a few more.
Finally, I just ignored it all, and listed 15 hardcore rock acts.

Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Kinks
Who
Eric Clapton
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Doors
Animals
Grateful Dead
Elton John
Pink Floyd
Crosby, Stills & Nash
Bruce Springsteen

Fifteen??? You are a harsh taskmaster, @rebbel.
I would keep:

Chuck Berry
Elvis Presley
The Beatles
Bob Dylan
The Rolling Stones
The Who
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Doors
The Grateful Dead
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
The Velvet Underground
Bruce Springsteen
Queen
Metallica

But I think it would be a stronger list at, say 30. It hurt to cut some of those names.

I’m a young punk that needs to do more research, because I barely know who Chuck Berry is. I apologize.

I have been there a few times and I don’t believe that any organization can even make such a list and vote on it.

Who are they to decide what art/artist we enjoy?
