Do you feel ashamed for enjoying certain songs? Which ones?

Asked by gambitking (4206points) March 29th, 2012

I’ve been hearing some newer and alternative type music lately, and some songs sound so good that I love listening to them, but the lyrics or message are so horrible or perverse that I feel ashamed of the part of me that likes the song.

(I’m also willing to accept your guilt-dumping answers about songs you secretly enjoy but would never tell your friends you listen to.)

If you know what I’m sayin, sound off!

I’ve been listening to Quit Playing Games With My Heart by the Backstreet Boys a lot lately…..not necessarily ashamed but I wouldn’t PREFER to mention it to everyone I know HAHA. I’m listening right now

I also, as many people know, have a Hall and Oates addiction. Some of the words are so bad. Like, so silly. Why did they choose to say that. “Adult Education” is a perfect example. Oh its so bad. I listen to Hall and Oates every day and am kind of embarrassed about that. But everyone knows it. I’m not ashamed, just shocked by how long the obsession has lasted hahah.

“I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor. It’s an awesome song to sing and I don’t care what other people think lol.

I grew up in the 80’s.

“That Should Be Me” by the Biebs. Ugh. I can’t help it, I love the song. Also, I’ve recently found my Hilary Duff, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, and N’Sync CDs. xD I’ve been listening to them nonstop lol. But, I wouldn’t tell anyone.

The Three Degrees.

It never goes out of style from generation to generation.

“Tush”, ZZ Top

Great, hard-driving tune, but I wouldn’t whistle it in public.

@Jude You are giving the 80s a bad name! There were so many great songs out of that decade.

The fact that I still like some Abba songs is a constant source of irritation.
I mean, they’re so bloody trite & cheesy but at the same time, wonderfully melodic.

LOL @Jude… me too

I’m pretty ashamed that I like some of Britney Spears’ songs, considering she’s such a terrible role model for young girls. I have actually explained to my daughters that while I may like a few of Britney’s songs, I still dislike Britney as a person. I’m the same with Angelina Jolie, though. I like many of her movies, but I can’t stand her as a person.

Baby got back—- I like big butts and I can not lie

my bf just never stops singing “I like big butts and I cannot lie”. I feel ashamed for him apparently, he never gives a damn to the lyrics.

I like ‘Cocaine’ by ZZ Top, although I have never use it or any other drug in my life. I just enjoy the song.

This is so weird because I just posted something similar to this on FB. I was jamming out with my clam out to a song that I heard for the first time, and then I found out it was Justin Beiber. I cried a little.

Fire – The Pointer Sisters sounds great until you realise the message is “even if she says no, she’s lying.” But it’s such a catchy, cool song!

No, none. Why are y’all shamed? Someone puts it in your head that you should be, right?
