What is your favourite film soundtrack composer and/or soundtrack?

Asked by ilvorangeiceblocks (865points) July 16th, 2012

Very soon I’ll be in charge of audio engineering for a short film and am looking to expand my knowledge of composers, soundtracks and even just bands/artists in general so that I may be inspired and have in mind more of a vision for what I’ll be creating. Any suggestions for interesting music in films or film soundtrack composers that have really been enjoyed by members of the Fluther?

Danny Elfman is pretty darn good.

Favorite soundtrack? Probably the one from The Royal Tannenbaums.(soundtrack)

Favorite composer is John Williams.

But my favorite film soundtrack is Harold and Maude, (Cat Stevens) because its also one of my favorite movies.

But for soundtrack alone, it would be The Graduate (Simon & Garfunkel)

Congrats on your upcoming gig :)

What immediately comes to mind is the soundtrack to Hackers. Simon Boswell didn’t compose any of it to my knowledge, but he chose all the tracks. Including Underworld, The Prodigy, and Orbital. Mmmmm.

I also love the one to The Graduate @Buttonstc.

@chyna

That is one of the true classics.

I didn’t care all that much for the film itself but S&G are incredible.

BTW are you familiar with a song from Art Garfunkle called “All I Know” ? It was featured on the sountrack of one of the episodes in the show “Nip/Tuck”. A beautiful haunting melody.

Any Tarantino movie comes with a kick arse soundtrack guaranteed.

I don’t know if this will help you since it’s about a TV show, but I love David Schwartz’s work for Arrested Development. It made the show even more enjoyable.

All that original composition for The Godfather movies by Nino Rota.

Stewart Copeland (formerly of The Police) is really great.
I remember his soundtrack to a western called Silverado. It was like the iconic western soundtrack! I guess some would say that makes it cliched and they may be right, but that’s what I liked about it.
He’s done a lot of other highly respected work since then.
Here’s :some other suggestions from someone who knows a helluva lot more than me!

Soundtrack to Dead Man by Neil Young. Some of his best stuff.

I have always liked the soundtrack from “Johnny Handsome” with Ry Cooder.
Give it a listen.

Instrumental soundtrack – for some weird reason I get stuck on the movie Ghost with Patrick swayze & Demi Moore.

Soundtrack with vocals my favorite two are from Good Morning Vietnam with Robin Williams or Forrest Gump with Tom Hanks. Soundtracks with vocals that bring memories &/or emotions to the surface always help to emotionally attach the viewer to the film.

Also, any Woody Allen movie (@gailcalled already mentioned a couple). He typically uses classic jazz recordings, though Manhattan had an all-Gershwin soundtrack.
