Have you bought a piece of technology that was then a dud?

Asked by TheProfoundPorcupine (2549points) September 28th, 2012

Companies are always bringing out new technology or updating old products and making them better and it seems to me that it is difficult keeping up with new advances all the time. There is of course that idea that if you buy a brand new computer it is already out of date within a week, but that is not what this is all about.

We are all told how amazing this new product is and why we should all rush out and buy it straight away at this super high price as it is all new and shiny and quite often we do. I did this years ago with a small portable handheld television that I then only used twice as I would have got a better picture if I had hand drawn each screen myself.

So what piece of technology or item have you bought and then looked at it years later and thought, why did I do that??? Did you gamble on Betamax video machines only to find out that VHS was King?

Heh…many times. I bought a top of the line DVD player some years ago that broke within a year and now I have super cheap, off the wall brand that has never stopped working the last 5 years.haha

I also bought a top of the line refrigerator some years ago, a G.E. with all the computerized crap, whose compressor blew up in two years. The 1949 G.E. fridge that was originally purchased by my parents waaay back when and was in our family cabin for 30 years is STILL running strong, has never failed, after almost 64 YEARS! lol

I bought a Sega Dreamcast when they first came out way back in grade school. Saved up for it and everything. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but compared to most console systems it had a very short life span and not a big library of games.

Here is a lightbulb that has been burning for 110 years!

My husband is a sucker for new gadgets. They NEVER work like you think they should, and we waste money every time.

@Dutchess_III I have a mood lighting fetish and HATE the newer energy saving spiral bulbs. Bah, they have the ambiance of an autopsy room. lol I have a huge collection of cool light bulbs and I cruise thrift stores to find unique ones. Bah government controlled lighting, step away from my cool light bulbs!

I bought an Intellivision computer. It turned a pretty good video game system into the worst computer ever created. It actually got sent from the factory with a virus already installed.

@Coloma They make energy-savings bulbs with the “mood-lighting” of the bulbs being phased out. Should look into them. I cut my power bill by like $15/month back in college by swapping bulbs to the energy saving ones. And they all lasted quite a while, I still have 3–4 (out of a 12 pack) today, ~8 years later.
