Is every election the most important?

Asked by Unbroken (10746points) October 20th, 2012

We have all heard it. This election is truly the very most important one.
Usually followed with a partisan speech or why you should vote for this person.
Stump speech aside isn’t every election matter. In my opinion every election is important because it is the present and has sway on the immediate future.
Any other thoughts on this.

Haha, it will always seem that way, I’m sure, but no. As important as the current election feels, I’d say it is not more important than the election of 1864, for example.

Only to the people trying to get elected.

Just because people say each election is the most important one, doesn’t actually make it so, of course. When I think about what makes an election important, there are several factors I consider: How big is the gulf between the two candidates? What long-lasting legislation are they hoping to pass and how likely is it to impact the way people actually live their lives? Are they likely to be appointing Supreme Court justices?

- When the candidates are both basically moderates who merely lean in one direction or another, it’s not so important. This time? Romney might be a moderate, or he may be a right-wing nut-job. We just don’t know, because he changes his positions constantly. The gulf could be huge.

- When the long-lasting legislation they are likely to pass is mostly about maintaining the status quo, it’s not so important. This time? Major economic changes, civil rights (for women and the LGBTQ community), income tax reform, health care reform, immigration reform, and maybe Roe v. Wade are all on the table. The impact could be huge.

- The Supreme Court plays a major role in our country, and the justices are appointed for life (or until they step down). This time? Four justices will turn 80 during the next president’s term. HUGE.

This election is very likely the most important one in my lifetime. Vote for Obama!
