Has anyone come across malware called FBI moneypak?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) November 25th, 2012

These crooks want $200 to remove the malware. My dad’s compaq laptop running Windows 7 just became infected with this crap. The laptop boots up but then instead of going to the desktop, it goes to a white screen and stays there. I even disconnected the router or whatever, left it off for a minute, then turned the laptop back on without internet connection but the problem still remains.

I can’t access safe mode, safe mode with networking or last known configuration. I can however, access safe mode with command prompt. In here, I was able to access the registry files, but I have no idea what I’m looking for in order to delete this malware. I cannot access task manager either.

If someone can point me in the right direction on what registry files I need to be removing for this nasty thing, I’d appreciate it. I’d like to look at all possible angles on removal before being forced in taking the laptop in to be fixed.

I figure I can’t mess it up more than it already is. Thank you.

Get a professional to fix it. Have a virus scanner and block put on your Dad’s laptop.

I have a friend who has been nailed by this a couple of times. It’s fairly easy to get out of though.

Here is one of MANY guides of how to get yourself clean without having to pay a professional, and a quick Google search can net you at least a few hundred more.

Thanks. I was able to restore it to factory settings. Seems to be working fine now.
