Can anyone name this depressing movie? I want to buy it.

Asked by Aster (20023points) December 9th, 2012

Here’s how it went: a man with a wife and five or six kids begins talking non-stop about how great Australia is. At some point they all move there and get settled. Then he leaves for the states saying he has work to do but he’ll be back soon. The family hates it there for quite awhile and they’re very upset their father/husband hasn’t returned. Then it dawns on them they need an income and it details their struggles to make ends meet in the outback since he is evidently never returning to them.
Anybody know the name of this movie?

This list might help you find it.

@augustlan I had a good look through that list, and couldn’t find it there. I’m curious to know the answer, too! The first film the description brough to my mind was The Mosquito Coast, though it is set in Central America, and has a rather different outcome.

This is like déjà vu… Hasn’t someone asked about this before, and wasn’t it based on a true story? I don’t have time to search right now… Fluthering is making me late for work again!

Aster's avatar

Yes; it was based on a true story. I guess no one liked it but me? I can’t even find it using google.

Unbroken's avatar

I looked at the list and peeked at a few plot summaries… Some truly odd Aussie movies. But no luck.

Thank you, rose hips!

@Aster- this is bugging me because I swear I’ve heard someone ask for help finding a movie with that plot line, but my search here and on the web are yielding nothing.

@Aster Do you know roughly when it was made, or when you saw it? And the family was American?

PeppermintBiscuit's avatar

Do you remember any of the characters’ names at all? That could help in a search.

Thank you, @hearkat . I can picture the mother right now in the movie. Great idea to name her; that would probably bring up the movie in google . I don’t know her name! She often plays a depressed woman therefore she was perfect for the role. She has such sad eyes.

@Aster – Was she an American actress? Any physical description and about how old do you think she might be today? Can you recall any other movies she was in?
About when was the movie made… ‘80s, ‘90s, 2000s?
In what era did the movie take place?

Aster's avatar

Yes; she is an American actress, brunette and I’d say she’d be in her sixties today. No; I can’t recall any other movies with her in them and I don’t even know when the movie was made. I think it reflected the modern era. Thank you. I’m going to keep looking.

Aster's avatar

Nope; a Place to Call Home doesn’t sound at all like what I’m looking for.

Aster's avatar

Linda Lavin is the mother , the title is correct so why can’t I find it to buy?
