I need advice on what to do next with bills after having received approval of Medi Cal?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) December 15th, 2012

A while back I checked myself into the ER for chest pains. It took about 3–4 months to get approval for Medi Cal. I have my Medi Cal card, now what?

Do I physically go to the hospital?

I have bills from 1. Hospital 2. Chest X Ray Group 3. Ambulance

Contact the numbers on each bill separately and give them your insurance information over the phone.
They will process it and inform you rather you are approved or not.

If you have the time, go down to the hospital accounting department with all your info. it will help expedite things instead of doing it over the phone.

This is going to vary by hospital. Wait until Monday and call the hospital. I wouldn’t rely on internet people for this info.

You need to be vigilant. Was your medi cal granted retro actively? If not you’re out of luck but you could try providing them with a copy anyway and they may write it off knowing that you can’t get blood from a turnip. (Long shot but worth a try.)
If it WAS granted retroactively, you need to make several copies of the letter that granted it and send a copy along with the bill to each debtor. Keep copies for your records. Every time they send a bill you need to send them another copy. If they call you tell them that you already sent them a copy but you would be glad to send it again.
They have to jump through some unfamiliar hoops on their end to get paid retroactively for these debts so they will keep trying to collect from you rather than figure out how to get it from the state but stay vigilant, ask to speak to supervisors and try not to get to frustrated. I don’t envy you. I had to do this for my son and it was a total pain in the ass.

@Judi I did apply for retroactively, but all I received was my card. I’ll try it all out, holidays, work and school are overwhelming atm!
