Do you believe people are basically lazy or hardworking and why?

Asked by Highbrow (366points) January 6th, 2013

I think it’s in our human nature to be lazy—however, this isn’t the kind of laziness that most people believe that it is. Before humans evolved as an intelligent species, many animals—including homo sapiens—made their living by simply being alive. Picking food from nature to eat for survival. Finding a fresh water stream for hydration. Building shelter to protect ourselves from the natural elements. Simple, mindless tasks that are elementary in nature, because it was all we needed to do to survive, and that was all that used to matter. To us modern day societal folk, we see that as laziness, because we have twisted our own nature around us and made establishments, governments, rules and laws, and further complicated our own lives. This has made life harder for us, and therefore, we have to work harder just to stay alive.
So in nature, humans are essentially “lazy” creatures because we have simply evolved from an era where we did not need much work in order to stay alive. We have just created the chaos for ourselves.

How do you react to that ?

Plagiarism is also a form of laziness.

Allow me to voice my opinion by writing a lengthy anecdote:
While on holidays in Italy…..eh, forget it.

It depends on the individual’s personallity and drive. There are both types, and society seems to drift back and forth between which is more acceptable.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m definitely a workaholic. Work is the reason I am living. Being a Capricorn(Born 1, January), work plays a major role in my life. I set high standards for myself.
I always strive for perfection.
Malignancy and my sense of duty always help me get what I want. I can sometimes appear stiff but never ceases to achieve my task both professionally and personally.
Trustworthy person, and eminently worthy, I am a follower of compliance. Having a great strength of character, I’m ambitious by nature, very responsible. I have a strong bias towards rigor and has a real sense of duty.
Endowed with intuitive qualities and a good repartee, I have good faculties to carry out civic and social activities . I am a more natural leader who will do its utmost to succeed in life.
I also enjoy all the pleasures of life, all the pleasures of the earth…and the kitchen in particular. I am someone who lives for pleasure of life and feels things even if I sometimes conceal my emotions and feelings to others.
I am someone who possess great perseverance, rigorous, of a serious nature, who also seeks perfection(all the time!)
Patience is one of my hallmarks.
At work, I am ambitious and clever at the same time and I’m fond of hard work. I will carry out any work entrusted to me with seriousness and thoroughness. This tenacity makes me quickly distinguish from others in a group because I am, moreover, inherently wise. I like domination, so I feel very comfortable in my duties in the officers and managers in large responsibilities.
I am someone who has a good intellect, coupled with a relentless logic
I have a sense of observation which allows me to complete what I undertake.
I walk patiently, but steadily on the path of life.
Because of my calm and thoughtful nature, I rarely enters into a rage. I avoid as far as possible situations which may cause disputes.
My honesty and my devotion makes of me someone you can count on and who can be trusted.
However, I tend to want to control everything, which is not to everyone’s taste. This provision is consequential upon the point that I do not appreciate the uncertainty. I plan ahead of time my actions and there is no room left for improvisation.
Despite a very determined appearance, I am a very shy, sensitive and romantic. I shall be deeply affected by a disrespectful attitude from those who surround me.
I’m good at making good investments and build upon my capital.

I think most people will work hard at something they enjoy doing well, given the opportunity. Pride and skill should be self supporting, but seldom is. It is hard to go to a low paying sucky job every day, but it is better than nothing. How to grind the life out of the soul.

I think workaholism is far more of a problem than laziness. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs when most people can’t relax and are constantly driven to attain, succeed, strive for more and more. Bah Humbug! I like the saying that we are human “beings”, not human “doings” and I long ago learned to embrace slowing down and stopping to smell the roses.

@Highbrow I’m a Capricorn too, Dec. 26 and while I am a tenacious little goat, strongwilled and resourceful I have never been a workaholic. Actually new studies on self esteem say that those of a good self esteem are not workaholics. Turning down ones boss for extra work is seen as a lack of commitment but, in reality, it is a healthy sign that work should not be everything.
Work to live but live to work is my mantra. :-)

My ex boss was always trying to guilt and manipulate me into taking on more than I wanted. Bah Humbug…time to hit the road and find a better fit. :-)

Good to know, Coloma. We’re one of the best!

@Highbrow You betcha! I think workaholism is more of an issue with a lot of men.The fucking programming is so diehard. I think it’s pathetic and really feel for the burdens men in this society have to cope with.

My goal is to become one of the most clever people in the world! And I’m gonna make it!

Coloma's avatar

I’m very clever myself, but the world is big, and most of our cleverness unfolds in obscurity. haha

I’m a lazy Capricorn, but I work hard when I need to.

flutherother's avatar

People will put a lot of effort into doing something they enjoy and not even think of it as work. Work is when you do something for someone else and you are not convinced that what you are doing is worthwhile.

Coloma's avatar

@flutherother Right. Do what you love and you’ll never “work” a day in your life. This has always been my goal, not always attainable but always striving for it.

I believe intelligence comes from laziness. If you are lazy, you are motivated to do things more quickly and more efficiently in order to give yourself more free time to relax and enjoy. If it for this reason, that when I hire, I seek out lazy people.

Now is our nature inherently lazy? I think not. Most people seem to admire industrious people. They admire workers, not thinkers. Or they don’t understand the relationship between laziness and thought.

Lazy people accomplish more than industrious people, I think. They do more in a shorter time. Industrious people seem to take forever to do the same things that lazy people do quickly. But most people are industrious, not lazy. Most people like the idea of being hard workers, and they equate hard work with lots of work, not necessarily efficient work.

So I think people are basically hardworking. It’s a shame. But the really valuable people are the lazy ones.

My personal example of laziness is handwriting. I hate handwriting because it hurts my hand and it takes a long time and lose half my thoughts when writing by hand. Maybe more.

Anyway, I learned to type so I didn’t have to handwrite. Now I can type at the speed of thought, and I can write ten times as much as I would if I had to write by hand. We can argue about how valuable that is, but it allows me to respond to a lot more questions at greater length, and all because I was too lazy to write by hand.

I think most laziness is just an exten . . .

Lazy and hardworking are judgments. It’s like asking whether you like people or not.

I think people do what they have to do as best they can do it.
