Do you think that people who make negative comments about the opposite sex on the internet don't get a lot of positive opposite sex attention?

Asked by Imadethisupwithnoforethought (14682points) January 7th, 2013

I suspect this a lot.

Moreover, as I ponder this, I have trouble thinking about how this would play out for members of the GLBT community. Is a gay man likely to put down other men if he is not very popular with his targeted partners, Or would he say derogatory things about both genders?

I have seen gay men be absolutely viscous towards each other. I don’t know if they were just jealous or felt like they weren’t getting the proper amount of attention from them, but it sounds right.

That’s a very interesting question, and unfortunately I don’t have a good answer. I’ll be following.

And I am falling over laughing from your topic “I am free to accompany married women to office parties.”

I don’t know if it’s that they don’t get much positive attention or if they have had a significant bad experience and become jaded by it. I can see how someone just out of a bad relationship might be down on all men or all women, but those who are still feeling that way after a long period might need to get some help! Some people just can’t get passed their grudges.

:-) I will keep you in mind for my next office party @Imadethisupwithnoforethought. Do you not want to take single women to parties for a particular reason?

Good question by the way.

I’ve met people who don’t have a lot positive to say about the opposite sex. I do assume that they have had bad experiences with the opposite sex. Usually it is men who are bashing women, but there are also plenty of women who bash men.

When I hear them talk, it seems like there usually will be a story about how they’ve been hurt by someone. But I’m not sure that’s the same as them not getting positive attention. I think it’s more personal, not general. It is about their own specific experiences, not about how men or women in general have treated them.

Most people go from the specific to the general. Two or three bad experiences, and they generalize to everyone. It’s understandable. What always bothers me is that they rarely seem to examine their own behavior to see if there’s anything they are doing that engenders the bad reactions from the opposite sex.

It’s possible that at the specific time they are bashing the opposite sex that they are going through some sort of breakup or divorce and not only do they hate the person that hurt them, but they also hate all of the same species. Fast forward to a year later and you might see the same person gushing over new found love and how great the male/female species is.

Just one word….duh!

Man, I wouldn’t mind seeing some gay men being absolutely viscous toward each other.

Although I have often seen people become jaded, as @Bellatrix mentioned, I do think part of this is also learned behaviour. If you grow up in a sexist environment, there’s always the chance that it will colour the way you see the world, too.

I’ve been amazed by how often a thoroughly misogynistic male will have a real hottie as a mate. Is there something women admire about Luddites and Neanderthals?

burntbonez's avatar

You would not believe the things I’ve heard from women. But it doesn’t make me feel jaded. I am ever hopeful. I think your generalization probably has a weak correlation if any.

No way, man. It’s just that some women really are (insert) (insert) (insert). I’m not sexist, though I’m, just saying…..

Lol.

Oh hell, I have been within earshot of two gays letting it rip and made my jaw drop. The boys are vicious more so than women cat fighting. The vibe was similar but more intense. I wanted to move away from there. Not pretty.

Almost certainly those people have been hurt, and haven’t gotten over it. Some of them never do.

I myself am quite partial to a bare breasted, scratch your fucking eyes out, hair pulling, fanny kicking bitch fight…but that’s just me ;¬}
