YES, This question is making fun of the entire concept, but you KNEW that before you even read my posts and decided to answer. You came here looking for an argument. @SavoirFaire Here in America we have a little thing called Freedom of Speech we take seriously. This wasn’t about religion to me at first, it was about other people getting mocked while I watched for months. I just decided to hit it head on, because I’m an Ameican, that’s how we roll baby. Jesus can use me as His tool any way he see’s fit, I’m up for it.

I do agree with the comment in the other thread, about being outnumbered not being the same as being oppressed. I have said it before, and I often feel that what I believe is what is offensive to many believers, and that was verified again today.

I, personally, find it to be refreshing when I find places online – like Fluther – where you have a lot of open atheists. I find it to be very difficult, if not nearly impossible, to be openly atheist in my day to day life, so it’s sometimes nice to let my hair down.

However, this…. no, I don’t see how this is constructive. I don’t see who benefits from this, I’m not sure how this is helping in any way. I am really not respectful of religion, I don’t feel a drive to do that, but there’s a difference between not respecting someone’s religion and not respecting them. I think that @KNOWITALL asked a fair question. I don’t think that Fluther, in general, tends to be very nice to believers, and neither do I. I’m not going to coddle anyone. I’m not one to go out of my way to make sure that I don’t offend anyone, but I also don’t try to go out of my way to offend people, either.

I’m not really sure why I’m spending all of this time gathering my thoughts and trying to actually respond to this, since I’m sure this question will get yanked based on the discussion above… but, too late, I typed it.

The fact is that humans have been taking comfort in a whole host of beliefs for a very long time and we will continue to do so. Were the parents of the child that was laid on a swans wing at Vedbaek some 7000 years ago being silly or did it bring them some comfort? Were the Egyptians just being a bit thick with the whole mummification thing or did it bring them some comfort? Or perhaps the early Neolithic people in the north of Scotland who laid their dead in stone cairns in the foetal position and painted the inside of the cairn red?

We tend to look at those kinds of things with intrigue and not ridicule so what is the difference between those examples and Jews, Christians, Muslims or whoever else?
