Why does my puppy go crazy and prance around when I give her a small dog biscuit or little sausage?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) March 13th, 2013

She bounces around it in an attacking manner and barks at it. It is so adorable and funny. Almost as if she thinks it is alive!!!!! Have you had your dog doing that?

Because she is not yet old enough to be blasé.

It is instinct for dogs to kill their food. Mothers teach their young through play. Even though dogs are domesticated there are still many of their inborn instincts that still surface. Have you seen puppies playing and how rough and tumble they can be? They haven’t always been dependent upon humans.

Just playing great huntress! My dog gets pretty excited by food too.

My dogs are at the end of their lives but when I get home and head for the pantry, they turn into puppies at the prospect of a treat. One of them has ‘go go gadget’ legs and can bounce about three foot of the ground in excitement. I have always just put it down to being very excited about their treat.

“She likes me! She likes me! She really, really, likes me! I’m so excited! I had this thought most of my life and I sort of hoped it was so… but she likes me! She really likes me!”

I agree, it’s the killer instinct. She’s trying to learn how to attack and kill her prey.

It always amused me how my dog would attack a leather football. She would growl at it and shake it about until she made a little hole, then she’d really tear at the hole until it was big enough to get her muzzle inside. Then she would burst the inner bladder and pull it out in bits. One day I watched a TV documentary that showed a pack of wolves killing a deer and pulling all the guts out of it, and it was exactly the same.

Our pets might look small and cute and fluffy but they’re still wolves on the inside.
