Will this internship help me out for future jobs?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) June 18th, 2013

As most of you know I’ve still been looking for a job the past 6 months since I’ve graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. I haven’t had any luck with applying and most times when I do get an interview I get turned down because I lack experience.
I’ve applied for unpaid internships which is difficult because there are hardly any in the fields I’m looking for and even when I apply I hear no response or they have gone with someone else.

I finally got a call from a locally owned spa company (not very big) that offers a paid part time internship for business administration. I will be doing administrative assistance work as well as reporting to the manager and receiving managerial experience. My interview is next week and they said they’d also like to discuss my career goals to help me.

I was just wondering would taking this internship help me out at bigger companies or future jobs? I mean it is experience right even though it is a small company and a SALON not a corporate place? I am interested in HR/Admin/Coordinating type work.

At this point you want to have somewhere decent to go to even several days a week. Learning the mechanisms of running a small company at least gives you some experience.

I would sign up and learn everything you can. You can then explore other options on the days when you are not working.

And you will get a small salary. Jump at it. Give it 6 months. Being able to own and operate a successful small business is an admirable skill in the present economy.

I’m just concerned because I want to work for a bigger company in a corporate environment. I just hope this can help.It does offer permanent job if they decide to keep you.

I guess a plus is I’ve always liked to own a spa if I were to own a business so I’d know the ins and outs if I want to start one one day along with some trade skill.

How can it hurt?

Not really hurt, it’d just suck if I did it and I still wouldn’t be able to find a job even though I’ve had internship/experience. I’m really just trying to find a way to build experience so it can help me and I’m so sick of people saying it’s because I lack it..

Better this than cooling your heels and continuing to get frustrated.

My sister and her husband ran a small retail (five employees) (art supplies, framing, jewelry, imported glass, pottery, fabrics, products of local artisans) etc. that required lots of skills to run. All of them could be translated to a larger business.

Personnel, inventory, finances, staff, advertising, PR, design and decorating, taxes and the IRS, and general management skills.

This will get you up, showered, groomed, dressed, fed and out the door with all of the other employed people.

Nice, thanks. I hope I get the internship =) It’d be a nice transition anyways to slowly ease into the “real” work world from my parent’s shop by going part time.
