How can I find an additional charger for my used and recently purchased MacBook air 13" - 2012?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) October 27th, 2013

I have the serial number and know that there are some secondary markets that sell these parts. From my preliminary research, It seems very confusing and hard to know what the correct choice is.

You could try going to an Apple store if there’s one nearby. They know everything and may even sell them there.

Look at the charger, see what wattage it is (45W, 65W, or 85W), and if it’s Magsafe 1 or 2. Magsafe 2 chargers will say Magsafe 2, Magsafe 1 will just say Magsafe. Then go into an Apple store and see what they’ve got.

My roomie just did this. He says the best bet is to get the official Apple unit and not mess around with the secondary market products.

Not eBay! Better to go to Fry’s and find one from a reputable brand.

I am going to the Apple store, I decided, and forget about the secondary markets. This laptop has been such a godsend during my recuperation and my bouts of insomnia that it deserves the very best. I can prorate it over several years.

@DeanV; The markings on the charger are very faint and hard to read. I will try a magnifying glass but the Apple guys can steer me in the right direction from the serial number. But thanks for the concrete and specific advice.

I got one on Craigsist for half the price of the apple store and it worked perfectly. (I live in NYC, btw so I may have a better selection depending on what area you’re from)

@LeavesNoTrace – 57 miles of dirt roads, 1600 registered voters, lots of dairy cows, goats, sheep, geese, chickens crossing back and forth on the dirt roads, llamas, bald eagles, great blue herons, ravens, foxes, bobcats, a few bears, coyotes, and very few cell towers.
