Best lyrics ever?

Asked by generalspecific (1874points) June 26th, 2008

What’re some of your favorite lyrics? And is it just the words, or the way they’re sung? Both?
I personally love all Nick Drake, especially “I Was Made to Love Magic”.

I love ALL Bob Marley lyrics. The quote in my profile is his. Here are more of my favorite Bob Marley lyrics;

“The good times of today, are the sad thoughts of tomorrow. ”
“In this bright future you can’t forget your past.”
“You ain’t gonna miss your water until your well runs dry”

Chiodos
————————————-
No Hardcore Dancing in the Living Room – “Don’t let this die, we may never fall in love again. It’s hard but worth the wait when it’s over”

Bulls Have Horns – “why can’t I take back all the time that I wasted on you
and use on friends that won’t bring me down”

The Sounds of Silence: “In the naked light I saw 10,000 people maybe more, people talking without speaking, people hearing without listening, people writing songs that voices never share…”

The Scientist: “Nobody said it was easy, it’s such a shame for us to part, nobody said it was easy, I’m going back to the start.”

“Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten”

@PnL, uh im sorry but i hate that song. i guess the lyrics are ok but it was so overplayed that i cannot stand hearing it.

jlm11f's avatar

@waterskier – you better hope we never meet cuz i will feel the need to keep singing it to you :P. though it probably was overplayed, luckily i don’t listen to radio.

waterskier2007's avatar

yeah i dont have much radio, but im on a waterski show team, and we travel to competitions and the year that song came out i think every team used that song, and about 5 individual entries used it too. i wanted to punch someone haha

Wow, this is a hard one.
Sleeping At Last: “I’ll make you mine if you would have me. With a silver ring that will hug you tight. Our life begins…...You were meant for amazing things.”

Death Cab: “And as the summers ending. The cold air will rush your hard heart away
You were so condescending: And this is all that’s left. Scraping paper to document. I’ve packed a change of clothes and it’s time to move on.”

Die Jugend Marschiert by Propagandhi probably has my favorite lyrics of all time.

That link has the lyrics and the audio of the song.

It’s my life

“it’s my life
It’s now or never
I ain’t gonna live forever
I just wanna live while I’m alive
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said
I did it my way
I just wanna live while I’m alive
It’s my life…”

I just wanna live while I’m alive”

it’s, to my taste, one of the best Bon Jovi songs (it touched my life)

My co-worker says the Smith’s “Sheila take a bow”. I say Bob Dylan for great lyrics in general! It Aint me babe, masters of war, Shelter from the storm. A verse from Shelter:

“Well, I’m livin’ in a foreign country but I’m bound to cross the line
Beauty walks a razor’s edge, someday I’ll make it mine.
If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born.
“Come in,” she said,
“I’ll give you shelter from the storm.”

waterskier2007's avatar

@flameboi, who is it that sings this song

wildflower's avatar

That is no less than my favorite band of all times: Bon Jovi!!!

waterskier2007's avatar

oh i knew it was super lame, just couldnt think who

jlm11f's avatar

ouchhhhhhh . you better hide from wildflower. and BON JOVI rocks!

flameboi's avatar

@waterskier
I just edited the response to include the band sorry!

flameboi's avatar

@PnL
good one ah!? remember the video?

jlm11f's avatar

flameboi : yep, was an energetic video too. matched the song.

eambos's avatar

@waterskier do you have to insult everyone elses opinions on music? You’ve already said you didnt like 2 bands and another was lame. What if I said Chiodos sucked? You don’t need to put others opnions down in every question.

wildflower's avatar

I believe this may be one of those times I’ll do my blood pressure a favor by taking a breather and doing something else for a little while…after all, it is beneath me to pick apart someone else’s statement with ridiculous, unfounded arguments.

waterskier2007's avatar

nah, most people think chiodos is lame
i have come to live with that.
i have a very weird set of music i like, i like music from a lot of different genres, but even in those genres i hate some of the artists, it just so happens that some of those i hate were mentioned here

ljs22's avatar

Cause those papercuts kept you from writing
A poem so epic and true
About how you are cursed with a beauty so great
I’m sure that it’s hard being you

So put down that book, it’s too serious
I’ll undress you as I make a joke
But please try not to laugh as I swim in your flesh
Just hold your breath till I finish

PnL: yes, sometimes, when I wake up and I feel like a million dollars, I get in the car and play the song, those are the kind of songs that we should listen all the time (those that scream, hey, life is oure gold, enjoy it) also i love “d’you know what I mean” by oasis, “song 2” by blur and a bunch others which works from bands like Manic street preachers, the stereophonics, kane, and some others :)

jlm11f's avatar

Bitch by Meredith Brooks always makes me smile too

complete lyrics

Chorus:
I’m a bitch, I’m a lover
I’m a child, I’m a mother
I’m a sinner, I’m a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I’m your health, I’m your dream
I’m nothing in between
You know you wouldn’t want it any other way

waterskier2007's avatar

@flameboi, speaking of oasis, wonderwall is basically amazing. we sung it to a sorority for our serenade. they loved it

wildflower's avatar

Oh, since we’ve already touched on Bowling for Soup and Bon Jovi, have to mention Punk Rock 101 She left him for staring at girls and not caring when she cried ‘cause she thought Bon Jovi broke up

@waterskier: seriously? oasis? if you like rhymes that much, you should go for Eve of Destruction – Oasis never came up with a rhyming match for coagulating

flameboi's avatar

@PnL
From the mid 90’s all the way to the new millenium there are so many songs that I might say, marked my teenage years :)

waterskier2007's avatar

@wildflower, its tough to judge a song by lyrics alone, what kind of tempo/beat is that song. is it slower like wonderwall or faster. it kind of reminds me of the song “slow down gandhi” by sage francis

jlm11f's avatar

Bowling for Soup is amazing too. I like how they can make good music while making a point.

flameboi: isn’t it strange how much effect these songs have on us? ESPECIALLY during teenage years.

flameboi's avatar

@waterskier
“Acquiesce” by oasis, is highly recomended, as well as “Champagne Supernova” and “stop crying your heart out”

trudacia's avatar

No offense…Meredith Brooks, Bon Jovi??

Where’s Nirvana, Pearl Jam, BIG, Jay Z, White Stripes, John Lennon? These are some disappointing results if you ask me.

flameboi's avatar

“Stop crying your heart out” by Oasis

Hold up
Hold on
Dont be scared
Youll never change whats been and gone

May your smile (may your smile)
Shine on (shine on)
Dont be scared (dont be scared)
Your destiny may keep you warm

Cos all of the stars
Are fading away
Just try not to worry
Youll see them some day
Take what you need
And be on your way
And stop crying your heart out

Were all of us stars
Were fading away
Just try not to worry
Youll see us some day
Just take what you need
And be on your way
And stop crying your heart out
Stop crying your heart out

this is a good i’m feeling o.k. song

flameboi's avatar

@Pnl: I can actually associate a song to every single moment opf my teenage years. “don’t speak” 4 the first break up, “evenflow” by pear jam when I was growing up in the wrong direction, Alanis Morriset, Colective Soul, gosh, so many good music, u see PnL, I’m nostagic now :(

waterskier2007's avatar

@trudacia, i agree with you, as you can see if you read my posts haha

wildflower's avatar

@trudacia
John Lennon: an all-time great!! Watching the wheels, working class hero, imagine, etc. Just beautiful! But not as funny as my previously mentioned.
But white stripe? (I’m thinking about the doorbell? Not exactly genius)

trudacia's avatar

@wildflower, agreed, Doorbell not the best example of good lyrics. But overall Jack White rocks.

NOFX- Please Play This Song on the Radio:

“We wrote this song, it’s not too short, not too long
It’s got back-up vocals in just the right places (in just the right places!)
It’s got a few oohs and ahhs (oooh aaah!)
And it takes a little pause
Just before I sing the F word…”

Bob Dylan and Bob Marley are obvious answers. I also appreciar the Simon and Grafunkle reference. Lately, I’ve been loving the Shins; they have the most creative lyrics…

A Comet Appears

One hand on this wily comet
take a drink just to give me some weight
some Uberman I’d make, I’m barely a vapor

They shone a chlorine light on a host of individual sins
lets carve my aging face off
fetch us a knife
start with my eyes
down so the lines form a grimacing smile

close your eyes to corrall a virtue
are we fooling anyone else
never worked so long and hard
to cement a failure

we can blow on our thumbs and prosper
but the lonely are such delicate things
the wind from a wasp could blow them
into the sea
with stones are their feet
lost to the light and the loving they need

still to come
the worst part and you know it
there is a numbness in your heart and its growing….

Great posts, lots of fun lyrics. But I believe the best ever lyric wordsmiths are Dylan and Lennon with a nod to Lennon for best ever lyric for Imagine. He actually made you feel it was possible. Until, of course, the reality of the world’s evils would sneak up and knock the wind back out of you. It stirs so many emotions, from sadness to hope…I doubt there is a more powerful song.

You Only Live Once by The Strokes
Some people think they’re always right
Others are quiet and uptight
Others they seem so very nice nice nice nice nice oh oh
Inside they might feel sad and wrong

Oh no
29 different attributes
And only 7 that you like, uh oh
20 ways to see the world, oh oh
Or 20 ways to start a fight

Oh, don’t, don’t, don’t
Get up
I can’t see the sunshine
I’ll be waiting for you baby
‘Cause I’m through
Sit me down
Shut me up
I’ll calm down
And I’ll get along with you

Ooooooo-ooooo-ooooooh
Oh, men don’t notice what they got
Women think of that a lot
1000 ways to please your man oh oh
Not even one requires a plan. I know
Countless odd religions too
It doesn’t matter which you choose
One stubborn way to turn your back
This I’ve tried, and now refuse

Oh don’t don’t don’t
Get up
I can’t see the sunshine
I’ll be waiting for you, baby
‘Cause I’m through
Sit me down
Shut me up
I’ll calm down
And I’ll get along with you

Alright..
Shut me up
Shut me up up up up up
And I’ll get along with you…
And of course the origianal of this song.I’ll try anything once

Where next, Columbus? by Crass

Anothers hope, anothers game,
Anothers loss, anothers gain,
Anothers lies, anothers truth,
Anothers doubt, anothers proof.
Anothers left, anothers right,
Anothers peace, anothers fight,
Anothers name, anothers aim,
Anothers fall, anothers fame.
Anothers pride, anothers shame,
Anothers love, anothers pain,
Anothers hope, anothers game,
Anothers loss, anothers gain.
Anothers lies, anothers truth,
Anothers doubt, anothers proof.
Anothers left, anothers right,
Anothers peace, anothers fight.

Marx had an idea from the confusion of his head,
Then there were a thousand more waiting to be led.
The books are sold, the quotes are bought,
You learn them well and then you’re caught.

Anothers left, anothers right,
Anothers peace, anothers fight.

Mussolini had an idea from the confusion of his heart,
Then there were a thousand more waiting to play their part.
The stage was set, the costumes worn
And anothers empire of destruction born.

Anothers name, anothers aim,
Anothers fall, anothers fame.

Jung had an idea from the confusion of his dream,
Then there were a thousand more waiting to be seen.
You’re not yourself the theory says,
But I can help, your complex pays.

Anothers hope, anothers game,
Anothers loss, anothers gain.

Sartre had an idea from the confusion of his brain,
Then there were a thousand more indulging in his pain,
Revelling in isolation and existential choice;
Can you trully be alone when you use anothers voice?

Anothers lies, anothers truth,
Anothers doubt, anothers proof.

The idea born in someones mind
Is nurtured by a thousand blind
Anonymous beings, vacuous souls,
Do you fear the confusion, your lack of control?
You lift your arm to write a name,
So caught up in the identity game.

Who do you see? Who do you watch?
Who’s your leader? Which is your flock?

Einsten had an idea from the confusion of his knowledge,
Then there were a thousand more turning to advantage.
They realised that their god was dead,
So they reclaimed power through the bomb instead.

Anothers code, anothers brain,
They’ll shower us all in deadly rain.

Jesus had an idea from the confusion of his soul,
Then there were a thousand more waiting to take control.
The guilt is sold, forgiveness bought,
The cross is there as your reward.

Anothers love, anothers pain,
Anothers pride, anothers shame.

Do you watch at a distance from the side you have chosen?
Whose answers serve you best? Who’ll save you from confusion?
Who will leave you an exit and a comfortable cover?
Who will take you so near their edge, but never drop you over?

Who do you watch?

give me a shot to remember
and you can take all the pain away from me
your kiss and I will surrender
the sharpest lives are the deadliest to lead
a light to burn all the empires
so bright the sun is ashamed to rise and be
in love with all of these vampires
so you can leave like the sane abandoned me
