Vlogging on youtube to gain self confidence?

Asked by lifeofm (12points) November 13th, 2014

hello,

I am a 24 yo girl with very low confidence. It’s so hard for me to talk to people. I am always putting up barriers (thoughts, reasons, excuses) for not following through on things. I always worry about everything and what people think of me. Ya i’m a pretty sad person…!

So i had this idea of starting a youtube channel where i would basically vlog about my attempt to gain more confidence. I would challenge myself, try new things, speak to people just do anything to try to gain more confidence and taking suggestions from viewers. I would do it on youtube because it would motivate me and would show my progress (hopefully!) and of course would help other people who want to be more confident.

What do you think of my idea? Would you watch something like that?

I would think it would be the doing of it for you rather than if anyone watched it that would be of value. It sounds like a good idea.

You can try it and see how you like it. The worst that can happen is you’re not into it and stop doing it. Try it, you may like it.

You think people who comment on video blogs are supportive?

I love the idea. As @filmfann said people are not always supportive, but some really are. I look forward to looking at your channel. That is if you share it. :)

It has the potential to be a great confidence booster, or a confidence destroyer. YouTube has a reputation for attracting the lowest form of humanity to its comments section. You should be aware that this tends to happen regardless of the worth of what original content is posted.

So, you could be an awesome person and/or an awesome presenter, and you might still get lots of mean comments. That’s YouTube. If you’re prepared to ignore those, and realize that they have nothing to do with you personally, then go ahead. But you say that you have very low confidence – and I worry that you might not be able to distance yourself from the mean comments that you might get.

Have you thought about how you might react if the comments are not favourable?

Now hearing what @dappled_leaves wrote, I don’t think I would do it. I know for myself, I am sensitive and would find it hard to tolerate mean comments. It would really bother me.

You know where most people seem complimentary? Facebook. People post photos all the time and they get lots of “beautiful” and stuff like that in the comments (even if the people are far from beautiful).

Welcome to Fluther.

Personally, I think you would get a lot more self-confidence (and it would be founded in real accomplishment, rather than whatever pretense you manage to project via video) if you actually do something useful.

Have you thought about volunteering at a soup kitchen, for example? Or visiting people at a retirement community / nursing home / hospice / homeless shelter? You’d actually be doing something worthwhile; people would be genuinely happy to see you; you’d feel good about yourself, no matter what anyone said (and I don’t think you’d hear negative comments in any case), and you could actually accomplish “good” in the world – and know that you can do that at any time. That’s a feeling of self-worth that no preening in front of a video camera can equal.

The idea is neat, but Youtube has one of the most toxic social communities on the internet, which is kinda sad since it’s the most mainstream. Tons of people get off on damaging and tearing people down, especially targeting those who can be seen as low-hanging fruit.

So if you do this, disable commenting.
