So what finally happened with/to the Ashley Madison site?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) August 13th, 2015 from iPhone

Those who hacked the site said that if it wasn’t shut down, they would release the confidential info of thousands of users.

Well, they’re still online and presumably the due date has come and gone.

So, what’s going on about all this? It was ubiquitous in news stories a month or two ago and now silence. Were any of those responsible for the hacking ever arrested? Was the data ever published as threatened?

Inquiring minds want to know :)

Anyone know anything?

Probably someone got paid off via an off shore account and now it’s business as usual.

Amazing PR campaign

The aftermath so far is covered pretty well here. There’s not much to the story at present. The highlights are this: the hackers have released the first set of names, and Reddit users have endeavored to reduce the potential damage by releasing false information and letting everyone know they have released false information (though not saying where) so as to make all sources less trustworthy.

@Silence04. That was my take as well.

The first celebrity to be “outed” from that site is Josh Duggar (if you want to call him a celebrity), the dad on the show where they have a zillion kids. I don’t watch it but I saw that he was the first famous person from Ashley Madison to have his info released.

I’m not thinking this is good publicity for the site, @Silence04 and @filmfann. How could releasing private information that may damage personal lives be good for a site?

It will be interesting to see how they (the family) try to spin this.

Also, up until now, I was also entertaining the possibility in the back of my mind that it might have just been a big publicity stunt cooked up by the company behind AM (since there didn’t appear to have been the threatened data release.) but that’s rather moot at this point.

@SavoirFaire
Thanks for that wiki link. I never thought to look there because their stuff is not always that up to date (at least not in my past experience.)
