My Laptop screen displays a weird mixture of colors and patterns instead of the desktop, and my pcmia dummy card is now missing from the card slot (must have accidently popped out). Can the latter be in some way affecting the former or is this just a coincidence?

I would have to say it is a coincidence as the Dummy card in a PCMCIA slot doesn’t do anything except keep foreign matter from entering the case. If you re-position the screen and the colors and patterns disappear, then the monitor flat cable is in question. If it does not, the video part of your laptop is in question. Welcome to Fluther!
