Have you gained a new appreciation for someone in the media's eye recently, and can you share that revelation?

In Conversation ChrisRock blew me away today.

I knew he was funny and smart, but that interview reveals some seriously deep smarts!

If you have one, share it?

I have admired Mr. Carsons Chutzpah in calling out the media when they get out of hand. I still haven’t enough information to decide who I ultimately will support, but that aspect of his demeanor has earned my respect.

We all know Steven Colbert’s biting wit, but on the third night of his new show, Joe Biden was in town on business.

He really got into a beautiful and deep discussion sharing the tragedies they each have weathered in their lives.

In addition to the recent death of his son, Biden also spoke about the death of his first wife and little girl in a devasting auto accident just prior to Xmas. and before he began serving his first term in the Senate. Both his boys were also severely injured requiring extensive rehabilitation.

Steven, while still a child lost his Father and two brothers in a plane crash.

The insights that they shared with each other were rather remarkable for that type of show and revealed the deeply human side of Colbert which is often hidden beneath the pundit. (Altho, he was also remarkably candid in an interview he did years ago on 60 Minutes.)

Anyhow, there’s a nice writeup about Colbert and Bidens talk on Slate and of course the actual interview can be seen on YT.

It’s definitely worth checking out.

Lewis Hamilton. I’ve always liked him, but his admission this week confirmed that. Mercedes said he would be late to the Brazilian GP because of a fever. But he came out and separately stated he’d also been in a minor road accident. For a professional driver who has just won the world championship at the pinnacle of his sport, that is a big admission for him to make. Legend.

@Buttonstc i saw that interview and it gave me profound respect for both Biden and Colbert.

I listened to Dan LeBatard interview Terry Crews and was blown away. He talked about the cult of masculinity, sexuality, porn, marriage, humility, repeatedly hitting bottom and working his way back up… Much respect for Terry Crews.

@janbb

I definitely felt the same way. I don’t know if the 60 Minutes piece is still available somewhere but that was also pretty profound.

I think it was Morley Safer who did the interview if I remember correctly. Anyhow, the interviewer asked really good questions.

I remember in particular when he was asked about whether he let’s his kids watch his show and he was kind of horrified at the thought.

He replied that every once in a while there he’d show them a silly fluff piece but not the show in general.

With interesting insight, he replied that young kids can’t properly process irony and he didn’t want to expose them to his characters personality. (They were quite a bit younger then).

It just showed a pretty deep understanding of children’s emotional development and needs. He didn’t want to risk warping their minds and his relationship with them.

I’m going to see if I can hunt it up. It was among the best interviews that stuck in my memory.

EDIT:

OK, I found it. Its from back in 2006.

Apparently it’s on the site below so hopefully someone can post a link.

@ibstubro

Thanks for posting those links. I’m on my old iPhone which can’t do c/p so I can only post whatever short links I can manually type out :)

^ The Terry Crews was a struggle!

@ibstubro

Do you think you could also hunt up and post the Colbert interview with Morley Safer from 2006 which originally aired on 60 Minutes?

It was quite profound. It should be on the site in my post above. (and possibly also YouTube)

Dan LeBatard has interviewed Terry Crews quite a bit. I’ll listen and see if that is the same one. Thanks so much for posting those links!!

Colbert and Morley Safer, 2006

I didn’t watch as it wanted too much access to my PC.

Buttonstc's avatar

Thanks @ibstubro

Not sure what you mean by access but…

I would assume CBS news is a site which can be trusted not to infect someones computer since they want to stay in business :)

I have a filter, @Buttonstc. I allowed ABC, then allowed all the page, which allowed things that wanted to be allowed as well. I did, and that allowed a bunch of things that wanted to be allowed and I closed the link. 3 ‘allows’ is my limit. NoScript on Firefox.

OK I see what you mean.

Did you try the Daily Motion site?

Either that or YouTube should hopefully give less aggravating results.

I posted the links to facilitate the question, @Buttonstc.
I have limited [satellite] internet so I so I have to be careful about what I watch. It has to be brief.
The links I chose seemed to best fit the description given by the OP.

The question was really kind of a way to talk Chris Rock up because I always knew he was funny. That interview wasn’t the first indication I’ve had lately that he’s also highly savvy-smart. Something I hold in high regard.
