If (as US Presidential hopeful Ben Carson believes) the Pyramids in Egypt were built as grain storage silos, how do you suppose they filled and emptied them, and how long would a Pyramid full of grain last?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) November 20th, 2015

Is there any indication of exterior openings in the tops or sides?

I’m curious how any thinking person could believe that the Pyramids were gain silos for more than a minute or two, much less 17 years and going.

Looking at this picture of the internals of the Khufu Pyramid, there is more volume in the passageways than in the chambers.
Dimensions for the King’s Chamber that I found: about 10m x 5m x 6m = 300m³.
Average mass per 100l of grain is an estimated average of 60kg, or 600kg per 1000l.
So we are talking about 600kg per m³, meaning the King’s chamber can store, if fully filled,
about 300×600kg=180000kg of grain.
Average consumption of grain per person is about 70 kg per year.
The estimated population size of Egypt at the time the Pyramid was built is 1.5 million
So…
180000kg/(70kg/ax1500000)=0.00171428571a (a stands for year).
or roughly a bit more than half a day.
A fully filled King’s chamber would last for half a day. That is how ludicrous that idea is.
And this is the belief of someone who wants to control the world’s largest nuclear arsenal.

Perhaps they were hollow to begin with, and later generations divided them into housing when population grew? @ragingloli
Then, as the apartments deteriorated and “the bad element” moved in, they were converted to luxury mausoleums for the rich.

Were they hollow, they would collapse immediately.

Oh, ye of little faith, @ragingloli.

Wow, @johnpowell.
I wish the picture had been enlargeable. I wanted a better look at Carson’s Jesus.

You would have a tough time coming up with a less efficient structure for storing ANYTHING other than the mass of stone required to erect it. For the life of me, I cannot understand the appalling talent Carson has for uttering these absurdities. It really is frightening (and I’m not exaggerating). The implication of someone with views so preposterous at the helm of the country are beyond imagining. I mean we should ALL be alarmed that he could get THIS close. Think about it. This is an EDUCATED man, supposedly a man of science. WTF?

That picture of Jesus resting his arm on Carson’s shoulder doesn’t bother me so much. The thing could just be a gift from some devout relative. In fact I have 2 friends and one relative who were in the navy, and all 3 of them have pictures of themselves in pea coats and enlisted man caps standing before and clutching a huge ship’s wheel. Jesus is right beside them, right hand on their shoulders, left arm outstretched with his index finger pointing the way. It’s embarrassing , but the message is impossible to miss.

I wholeheartedly agree that we should be scared that he’s even a candidate, @stanleybmanly.
