How is the law and order situation in your city?

Asked by imrainmaker (8380points) January 25th, 2016 from iPhone

What is the crime rate? Is it low / high compared to other cities in the state? Do you feel safe at any time / any place?

My city has had no murders, 3 rapes, 2 robberies and 15 assaults. Have a crime rate index of 52 which means my town is 52% safer than the other towns in the US.

I live in suburban Atlanta – the metro area is made of something like 20–23 counties, comprising roughly half the population of the state. Say, roughly 3 million people in the metro area.

Some areas are very dangerous – there any number of gangs. The most vicious ones are the Asian gangs (Vietnamese, Thai), and to a lesser degree some of the Latin American gangs (Mexican, Salvadoran). And of course, since Atlanta has a comparatively large percentage of blacks (when compared to other cities), there are a number of black gangs as well.

There are some places in the City proper that I don’t like to go, day or night. There are som parts of my own county that I won’t go to unless I have to.

My particular part of the county is mostly farmland, and very safe. No issues here. But I can drive 30 minutes, same county, different township, and be in a white-trash drug and meth dealing area.

I think that my experience is like anyone else’s that lives in a suburb of a big city. Some places are great. SOme are not.

Our police yawn a lot.

Where I live now, there are no cops to speak of. The only authority with any police powers at all is a wildlife constable who stops by now and then for coffee. But where I came from, Pinellas County, Florida, you needed to worry more about the cops getting out of hand and abusing their authority and the population than about the ambient criminal element. The PC Sheriff’s Department is especially off the chain. They are the reason people shoot cops.

My town, just north of Hartford, CT, is pretty peaceful and crime-free, but much of Hartford itself is a pit of crime and corruption (although parts of the city are pleasant, attractive and relatively safe). Between my town and the center of Hartford, North Hartford is one of the worst parts of the city.

I feel safe in my town at any time of day or night, and when I travel through Hartford… then I’m wary. But I’m not blindly safe in town, either. Weird things happen from time to time, and I try to notice – but I feel safe in doing that.
