Why do you support Hillary Clinton?

Asked by DoNotKnowMuch (2979points) April 4th, 2016

If you have voted for her in the primaries (or plan to), why is this?

Best chance or beating old Eddie Munster or CreepyMc OrangeFace.

I don’t really like her and would prefer Sanders. But I am fine with her. And I think she has a easier route in the general.

Did you vote for her in the primary? Was this your primary motivation?

I’m really quite stumped by this often repeated claim that she would be better in the general. For starters, it appears that anyone the Democrats run will be able to beat the Republicans in November. Second, all polling shows that Sanders does far better than Clinton against every possible Republican. Sure, Clinton can claim that she has weathered years of criticism, while Sanders’ poll numbers against Repubs don’t reflect the Republican attacks. But I find this whole line of reasoning absurd. The attacks have been relentless against Sanders in the mainstream/corporate media and Clinton campaign. Still, Sanders does far better. It’s also worth noting that Clinton has negative favorable ratings, and are only better than Trump’s by 10 points.

There’s also the issue that for decades, Clintons have been considered evil incarnate by Republicans. And she hasn’t been able to appeal to independents.

And there’s also the issue of her nomination as the nail in the coffin of the Democratic party. The “youth” (shit, anyone under 45 is considered youth today) is far more liberal/progressive than Clinton and they are coming out in large numbers and getting active in a very big way. To be shut down by big money and the establishment candidate that is considered the very epitome of everything they hate about politics will be very disheartening to say the least. It will pass on the opportunity to revitalize the Democratic party, and make it dependent on an ever-aging population. Of all the times to mirror the model of the dying Republican party, why choose now? The corporate Democratic party is dooming itself to irrelevancy. I will not be voting for Clinton, and I know very few people who will.

Assuming that Trump is the nominee, are you claiming that Clinton would be able to beat him in general and that Sanders would not?

Also, if there is anyone who actually supports her in a positive way, rather than a lesser-of-two-evils way, I’m very interested in hearing your reasons. Thanks.

Because my shrill, know it all, narcissistic mother doesn’t grate on me enough already.

I don’t support her. I don’t support any of the candidates though. The only advantage she has is she won’t do a damn thing and that may buy enough time to get some real candidates lined up in four years.

She’s better than Trump. But if I was American I’d be voting Sanders.

I was going to vote for her but I changed my mind in December and chose Bernie. I supported Hillary in 2008 and actually voted for McCain in the general because I didn’t think Obama was prepared to become President.

I liked Hillary because I thought she had the most experience. She has a relationship with other world leaders and she fights for women’s rights. There was also a part of me that would have loved to have Bill as first man. They make a great team. (damn I miss House of Cards)

Okay, @DoNotKnowMuch asked me to answer this, so I will take some time and give an answer.

I can’t stand ideologues of any stripe, liberal, conservative, it doesn’t matter. I can’t stand anybody who uses the word “revolution” when it comes to politics. Politics should be wielded not as a sledgehammer, but as a fine tool. I’ve been a centrist all my life. I started out a liberal Republican, in the mold of Eisenhower, who is a hero of mine. When the Republican party left me in the dust in the Reagan Revolution, I supported Anderson. I became a Democrat about that time, but as rancor continued to increase with Gingrich wingnuts and the ridiculous Clinton impeachment, the parties began to separate, and I was left wanting.

I decided about then that I would vote for the person who I thought would be able to stay in the middle to compromise. I also despaired because here in California my vote for President is meaningless because of the Electoral College map. But I still vote.

Anyway, let me tell you what I don’t care about:
1) The emails. I could give a shit.

2) Her vote on Iraq. She thought it was the right move at the time based upon the lies by the Bush Administration. So did most of Congress. She made a mistake and owned up to it. I’m good with it. I’d be even better if she had said something to the effect of “given the same information I would have voted the same way” but that would have been political suicide. (For the record, I was opposed, and my local very liberal congressman made a fantastic anti-war speech that many years later I complemented him personally on, but I digress).

3) The FBI investigation into #1. See the “I could give a shit” part.

4) Her speaking fees. So she made $250,000 a pop. BFD. If people are willing to pay it, more power to her. Personally, her voice grates on me so if people want to listen to that, fine.

5) Benghazi. Obviously a fuck up. But see #2 below

What I like:
1) Her command of policy is nuanced and intelligent. I don’t agree with everything, but it’s extremely well thought out. She is, by far, one of the smartest politicians I’ve ever seen; I think she’s smarter than Bill and that’s saying a lot.

2) Her 11 hour grilling by partisans on Capital Hill on the Banghazi hearings. She was cool, calm, and collected, and she never, ever lost it except for an eyeroll or two. That’s whose finger I want on the nuclear trigger.

3) Her efforts for attempts at effective gun control legislation.

4) And most importantly, her unwavering support for worldwide women’s rights for her entire political life. 20 years after this speech these problems still exist (in fact are worse) and I get so angry I could cry. Watch, or at least read that speech. It was that speech that made me a Hillary Clinton supporter for life. This issue, by far, more than anything else, is the most important to me and I want a President who will be a standard bearer for the protection of women around the world.

Okay? Good enough?

Because she’s not Donald Trump. Do I need any other reason?

Well I would rather America have anyone but Donald Trump. If it happens to be Hillary, so be it.

Sanders would be better though.
