What is your opinion on this UK politician who thinks HIV positive immigrants should be banned from the UK?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) April 9th, 2016

Back in 2014, Nigel Farge (leader of UKIP) called for people who have tested positive for HIV to be banned from migrating to Britain as a “good start” in controlling the UK’s borders.

When asked what sort of people should be allowed to migrate to Britain, he said:
“People who do not have HIV, to be frank. That’s a good start. And people with a skill.”

What are your thoughts on Farge’s comments?

Maybe the UK should try banning people who needlessly spread fear and paranoia from immigrating there.

Maybe people should check their facts, Farage lost his seat in the 2015 general election & immediately resigned as leader of UKIP.
So the good old people of the UK effectively did ban him, he was always considered a joke anyway

@ucme sorry it’s older article, I’ll change that

@NerdyKeith No, it’s still a valid question, my response was directed elsewhere :)

People in the US have brought this topic up also. Especially, back in the 80’s and 90’s when AIDS was still pretty new. My feeling was since it isn’t airborne we shouldn’t stop people from immigrating into our country. The reality is we have travelers anyway. Patient zero traveled a lot and was promiscuous. That combination got the ball rolling.

I can understand why some people feel we shouldn’t let people with HIV into the country. It’s expensive to treat and it is a contagious disease. Back in the day we did try to control for sick people coming into the country. 100 years ago medicine wasn’t as advanced, we didn’t have vaccines and an illness could kill a lot of people. We were letting people in to increase our workforce. Getting our workers sick or dead was counterproductive to the goal.

I know my husband was tested for HIV either when he wanted to become a permanent resident or citizen. I don’t remember which it was? That and proof of vaccinations and a TB test or X-ray. I think it was before becoming a citizen.

@ucme Farage never had a seat to lose. He’s only ever been an MEP. His resignation was reversed within a week.

So can someone clarify this for me. Is Farge still leader of UKIP? According to Wikipedia he is. Is Wikipeadoa correct?

@Kropotkin after he sober up I imagine

@NerdyKeith He is the leader of UKIP.

@Kropotkin Pehaps I should have worded it differently, the seat was not his to lose but lose it he did by virtue of not winning.
And yeah he withdrew his resignation but my point directly involved the timeframe between 2014 & 2015, as those are the pertinent dates in question here.

Nigel Farage is an extremist. So what he says doesn’t represent what most people think. He didn’t win a seat at the last election and, although he comes across as a jokey likeable person, most people realise he has some extreme views. Although not everyone disagrees with him. The UKIP party gained as many votes as the SNP. But because the SNP votes were concentrated in Scotland, they got seats but UKIP got but one.

Farage is an idiot but a dangerous one. A bit like Trump
