What THE HELL is wrong with the wireless driver on my Windows 10 laptop?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) April 25th, 2016

Seriously fucking pissing me the fuck off.

New Lenovo laptop. Already has Windows 10.

About last week I noticed that there was suddenly no wireless option. It was like I never had wireless in the first place.

I searched online and they said to reinstall it through the Device Manager. So I did that.

It happened a couple times and I just did that and it was fine.

Now there’s no wireless again. This time I can’t find the wireless driver on the Device Manager. So I find these directions to reinstall it or whatever through the command prompt:

1. Run cmd as administrator

2.Type in: reg delete HKCR\CLSID\{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170–676cbbc36ba3} /va /f

3. Then type in: netcfg -v -u dni_dne

4. Restart computer

When I do step 2, I get a message back that it can’t find the driver. But when I do step 3 it says the driver isn’t installed then it installs it and says “done”.

So I restart my computer

and nothing happens.

Fucking wireless still not appearing as an option.

And NO – it’s not my router or anything because literally everything else that’s running on wireless in my house works.

Goddammit the one time today I really need to use wireless on my laptop and this shit isn’t working. The hell is going on? I’m absolutely livid.

This is because…wait for it… Windows 10 fucking sucks. I gave it a chance and it’s a conglomeration of bad ideas propped up by ancient and outdated ones. I use windows 7 for work stuff and Linux for web browsing now.
try getting an external usb wireless dongle before you throw it out the window

I tend to agree with the first answer. I too run Linux and Windows 7. I’ve tried using Windows 8.1 and setting up Windows 10, and will try to avoid both as much and as long as possible.

I have this a GQ just because all the swearing made me giggle.

I don’t know the answer, but I know in my windows 10 all of a sudden my “sleep” option instead of powering off disappeared. It came back when we did an update, but how can you update if you can’t connect to wireless? If, that is if an update might help. Plug directly into the modem? I don’t know. I don’t know how those things work.

I realized that this started happening after I installed an update. Must have been either early last week or late the week before.

One of the fucktarded “innovations” of Winblows 10 is that it often only pretends to shut down. You have to do special stupid shit to make it actually shut down. So I wonder if you haven’t actually ever really shut it down since you updated, and if a full shutdown (or whatever retarded word they currently use to mean a real complete shutdown) might not get it to wake up and find your fucking wireless again.

There’s also the restore point feature, which might let you restore to before the update that might have lost the wireless.

If you’re really desperate, there is also a way (or there was on the Toshiba Win 10 laptop I fought with) to restore Windows to it’s original state.

If the cmd sequence you were trying says “can’t find driver,” it sounds like it’s maybe just looking through your computer? Just a guess. I have no idea what it’s saying to do.

I had a similar problem with the wireless driver on my previous machine (which ran windows 8), but uninstalling the driver and restarting the computer would do the trick (it was a recurrent issue for me, too.) ... if I recall the steps correctly, once I accidentally checked off the “delete driver software from this computer” button, which took the driver’s software completely off the computer, which meant that on restarting the driver was no longer there to reinstall…. I can’t quite remember what I did after that, but I didn’t have an ethernet connection available (i.e., no internet whatever), so I think I was forced to restore the OS to recover the driver. It worked.

But since you have an ethernet connection (at least, it sounds like you do) you could try finding the wireless adapter company’s website, finding their driver downloads, and reinstalling the driver through them?

Additionally, Lenovo’s website has a search-by-device driver’s page which may or may not give you a wireless driver for your computer. Althernatively, they have some beta drivers which—they’re beta, so may be even more glitchy—but you may find a matching driver there, and it may even have some patches that address the recurring breaking (assuming it’s a known issue).

Good luck!

Now it’s working again. After just being fed up and leaving my laptop off for most of yesterday until this morning, the wireless is back up. Smh wtf idk urrghaushfosafhsgsag.

No I don’t have an ethernet. I was able to post in here because I was using my desktop, not my laptop. But I really needed to do something online specifically with my laptop. But it seems to be okay now.

^^Thats good. Hopefully, it doesn’t happen again.

Now it’s doing this thing where my laptop’s wireless doesn’t want to work at home but everywhere else, like work, it does.
