Where can I learn Finnish (online & free)?

Asked by Lemley (285points) July 30th, 2016

I’m totally in love with this language, I’ve been searching all day, have found a few places (I mean internet places) but the results haven’t been the best. I would buy a book or something, but Finnish isn’t the language people learn around here. In Greece. Not even close! So, where can I find decent (and free) Finnish lessons?

There’s something called FinnishPod101 available through the US itunes. I don’t know if it’s distributed through Greek itunes. They try to sell their paid site, but the podcasts are free.

Other than that I’d check your library, book swapping sites and used book sites like alibris. I’ve gotten most of my Norwegian books like that.

You might have better luck if you search for the actual name of the language. It is called Suomi. You might get more hits.

Be aware that Finish is only related to Hungarian and (I think) Estonian, so unless you speak one of those, it’ll be one of the toughest languages you could try to learn :)

Suomi isn’t considered a Scandinavian language. It isn’t anything like Swedish or Norwegian.

@fundevogel Thanks, I checked it out but it’s not what I’m looking for… I’m looking for text, mostly.

@Vincentt and @cazzie I know, that’s why I’m learning it :) From what I’ve seen this far, I’d say it’s rather misunderstood than difficult. Russian has been waaaay tougher, and German has all those complicated rules. Right now I have collected bits and pieces form around the web, but nothing 100% complete or well-written.
Oh oh and there actually IS a book sold in my country, just one. And it costs 60 euros, so… I’ll pray to the gods of the internet.

@cazzie That’s what I said :)

@Lemley Cool :) Well, Duolingo at least has Hungarian already, so keep an eye on that and they might release Finnish as well. Can’t help you more than that, unfortunately.
