How to survive hayfever?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) August 17th, 2016

I’m miserable! I have, what I believe to be hayfever. Each Spring time, (it’s almost spring in New Zealand) – I wake up with one very blocked nose, then I sneeze, my eyes are itchy, my nose wont stop running and I’m coughing up gunk. To be fair, I have just gotten over a rather awful bronchial cold. To make it worse though I’m allergic to dust as well. How do I survive??? How do I build up my immune system so it doesn’t over react to pollen and dust. I’m interested in taking hayfever medication or medicating the symptoms, I want to get RID of the response my immune system has to dust and allergies. How to make my immune system calm down and not over react. Any ideas? Dr’s just give me drugs, I’m sure there is food or something that can help me. Being allergic to dust sucks balls! Plus, I’m not a tidy person. Thanks Flutherists

When you find out let me know. I had the full allergy panel done and they did not find the source of my suffering.

Oh gawd… It’s awful isn’t it. My eyes are so sore, my nose is a tap, my throat is sore plus my skin looks and feels dry and yucky!

I might do an allergy panel…. I haven’t done one yet, but look if they say, ‘Yes it’s pine.’ – then what? ——doesn’t really mean anything does it, hard to avoid trees!

Well, I wish I knew what to avoid at least then I could form some game plan that does not involve just taking Claritin forever.

Get yourself a Rainbow vacuum cleaner. (Try to find a used one, much cheaper than new) Be sure to change the water in the filter every time you use it!!!
Get one of those table top water fountain/waterfall things and use it in your bedroom. It will help keep the dust and pollen under control.

I think it may be a cold actually as I have a fever, very slight but still I dont think hayfever actually casues a fever does it?

How does the water fountain keep dust and pollen under control @kritiper

Relocate to a different climate.

There is no way to successfully avoid pollen. It is pernicious.

It may help clean the air and does so continuously. At least it couldn’t hurt and could help.

Why do you object to using medication to treat an illness?

__

Once allergies get out of control, they can lead to further illness including bronchial and ear infections. I’ve been told more than once by a doctor that I would probably not have survived to my teens if it weren’t for advances in medication for treatment of allergies.

By being lax in my use of meds in my early 20’s , I came very close to losing the vision in my right eye as a result of a severe reaction to corn pollen.

I do try to avoid allergens when possible, but careful use of medication has kept me alive and reasonably comfortable. Out-of-control allergies can be horribly uncomfortable – sneezing, watering eyes, itchy ears/palate/scalp/Eustachian tube etc.
