Can you answer some questions about vacuum sealing machines for stuff to store in the freezer?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46828points) August 8th, 2017

We got one. It came with a lot of bags. They’re all one size, too large for my needs. However, the sides are machine sealed. Can I go ahead and cut them to the size I need and then reseal the sides as well as the top?

If the machine seals the bags by melting said bag where the opening is.

You should be able to seal the sides and tops of newly-cut bags.

Those machines are great. You can freeze the food bags flat and horizontally, thus saving lots of space.

yes you can. You should also keep an eye out for sales on the rolls of bags you can cut to size. Go on line. There’s always a deal somewhere.

Thanks guys. My first attempt resulted in quite a bit of waste due to trying to not have any waste, but I finally figured it out.
@stanleybmanly I will do that. I was fussing about how much those bags must cost.

Hm. I just thought of something else. If I go ahead and use a full sized pouch, when I want to use the contents I just snip along a seal, then I can resuse it. It will gradually get smaller and smaller.
Or…maybe I can slit the seal and still reuse it.

I had a friend that use to reseal partial empty potato chip bags on a vacuum sealer.

I wondered about that too. What about zip lock bags?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Yup he would make sealed bags with “freezer” bags.

Did he have problems with the plastic melting onto the heating bar?

No he said he just shorten the time the heat was on.
