How can I hide my benzo consumption?

Asked by Cubone (29points) August 13th, 2017

I will spend 1 year with a host family and I need/want to hide my xanax consumption. It should be inconspicuous but also always ready to hand. My first idea was mixing some pills with chewing gums in a little can.

But it could be suspicious always carrying this can with me and also uncomfortable. And there is also a risk to be busted if I put it somewhere down and someone wants to take a gum.

Do you have any better ideas ? I would be very thankful

Where’s this need to hide coming from, if I may ask?
Can’t you see yourself opening up about your consumption to your host?
In my opinion there is nothing to be ashamed of.
Millions of people take them.
Hiding it from your hosts only (potentially) adds to your anxiety in the long run.
Besides the possible shame, there might be other factors that make you decide to hide it, but I don’t see them right now.
Maybe you can tell us what it is exactly why you feel that need?

@rebbel

Well first reason is because it’s not a random host family, it’s my real family and they are living in Russia. They are not accepting this kind of medication, for them it’s all drugs and they clearly confirmed that I ain’t allowed to take them with me. There was also some unsighlty situations during my vacation last summer when I was on Xanax and drank alcohol

Okay, @Cubone, that is more clear.
Can’t say I am very knowledgeable about the Russian culture and customs, but I know similar cultures where use of certain medications is frowned upon, or strongly recommended against.
Not a good situation to be in, if you are in need of said medicine…
But I think I understood that your family is already aware of your taking the Xanax (but not agreeing on it).
I think it is best if you keep taking them (that is, if the doctor (and you, of course) agree), and explain one more time, in clear and factual words, what they do for your health, and general well-being.
In my opinion the whole hiding/concealing in gum plan is a no no.
Another no no is the alcohol consumption, while on Xanax.
Not only can there occur unsightly situations; it can be potentially life threatening.
So don’t do that, I urge you.

@Cubone This medication must be prescribed for you. I think that with some of those drugs you can’t just stop them without adverse effects. I think @rebbel had good advice, that you continue your medication as prescribed and one more time tell your family what they do for your health and that you are an adult and they can accept this decision or not. I hope your family can rethink this situation for your benefit. I wish you luck.

When you have to hide something, it’s a problem.
One way or another it will eventually fuck up your life

If they would take issue with a necessary, prescribed medication then they’re probably not the right family for you to spend a year with. Is there no way you could get a different host family?

For God’sake will they be doing a body search? Keep them in your stuff discreetly ( not in their boxes ) use them responsibly when needed and you could have told them that they were prescribed for intestinal/digestive issues. I AM familiar with narrow-monded cultures when it comes to such medication. Will you be needing it on a regular basis?

well since deceit is your idea of the optimum solution, the remedy would seem to be storing the medication in a vial labeled for some more innocuous remedy for what you regard as a less onerous condition than your own. Of course, if your medication consists of tablets or capsules with XANAX stamped all over them, your odds of pulling it off diminish considerably. Personally, I would seriously doubt that you could room with an entire family for a solid year concealing whatever condition requiring your medication. Surely you would be better off laying it out there, even at the risk of rejection.
