Do you think Trump has committed another blunder by declaring Jerusalem as capital of Israel?

If yes why do you think so and if not why not? What do you think was the necessity of doing it?

Maybe.

I hate that we may have to deal with the Middle East and North Korea at the same time.

But I think its time we fully recognize Israel with Jerusalem as its capitol. There will always be those who feel the land belongs to the nomadic Muslim groups that now identify with Palestine, and maybe Trump will lose the momentum he gained with some Middle Eastern leaders where no other administrations could.. But the conflict is never ceasing, and Israel has a right to exist, and Jerusalem is its rightful capitol, and the most ancient and indigenous people there are the Jews.

Where else do the Jews have to go? What other Middle Eastern nation welcomes them? Jerusalem is the very heart of Judaism—the faith and people who established it. And Judaism is the root of modern Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and half-a-dozen more obscure sects born in the region

The Jews will keep the Holy Land, sacred to three major religions and invaluable to the sciences which study ancient civilizations—free and open to everyone. The Muslim nations have never valued our interest in ancient artifacts and cultures, nor other religions’ right to exist. Jerusalem belongs to Israel and is already serving as the political and cultural capitol, even though it has been officially Tel Aviv since its modern re-establishment.

There has never been peace in the middle east, never will be in natural times, and establishing Jerusalem as its capitol will always be disputed even if the U.N. were to recognize it as such,

Sources: I am by no means an expert on these things, but have been watching the situation since the 1980s.

It may incite the Palestinian moderates to action against Israel. From that standpoint it is a major blunder and like @Yellowdog two wars (maybe only words) at once is not a good decision!

No.

It is stupid to ignite a conflict in a region so volatile. Why he did it? Political gain. He offered this during the campaign and now he had to deliver to his donors.

This is Lord Balfour’s fault.

Too bad the issue isn’t about who will do a better job in the place. If that were the case, Oregon should “settle” Mississippi. And Israel is clearly about occupying more than its old homeland of Judea. And you can say what you want about all this homeland stuff. The truth is that just as it was here, Israel is about the expropriation of Arab lands by EUROPEANS.

It’s not Israel’s land. See this map: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9d/Split_Jerusalem_map_English.jpg

Violating international law by illegally settling an occupied territory doesn’t eventually make it yours…

Here’s article from the Independent and DJT’s real reason is to return control of Jerusalem to the Jews, therefore move to End of Days according for the Evangelical leaders and followers.

It like the “Rapture” for DJT and Evangelists.

I think it was a mistake. I heard Netanyahu praise Trump and say he was a man who understood the Middle East. I heard it on the radio so I couldn’t tell if he managed to keep his face straight when he said it but it is very disheartening. It is quite a blatant break with the UN consensus which has been trying for decades to get a solution that both sides could agree to. What was wrong with that? And what is the alternative?

The embassy should be in Jerusalem. The Israeli government is in Jerusalem and it’s silly for the ambassador to have to drive from Tel Aviv every time he needs to interact with someone.

gorillapaws's avatar

@Rarebear If China moved their capital to Tibet, should the US move it’s embassy there too?

Rarebear's avatar

Yes. The purpose of an embassy is for governments diplomats to interact with each other.

That said it was geopolitically a dumb move. Israel has wanted this forever. What the trump administration should have done was demand something from the Israelis for it such as, say, freezing settlements.

But Trump just gave it to them for nothing. Idiot.

There are two different ways to remove a band-aide . Do it slowly and let it eventually fall off or rip it off. Sometimes the faster method results in the wound reopening.
Before you rip off a band-aide you’d better be sure the wound is either completely healed or have supplies ready to collect the blood and treat it.

Trump has removed the U.S. from having a peace keeping role in the Palestine-Israel conflict. Abbas has just made that clear by canceling a meeting with Pence. Trump thinks that isolating the U.S. from the rest of the world will make us “great again”. He could not be more mistaken.

flutherother's avatar

If Trump is harking back to a time when America was “great” that would also be a time when America supported the peace process in the Middle East.

@flutherother ^ ... and wealth/income disparity was much lower.

I do love the notion that there’s no place for Jews to live other than Israel when, at most, only half the world’s Jews have chosen to settle there.
