Our air conditioning compressor went out. The bedrooms are hot now. What is a decent air conditioning brand?

Asked by Aster (20023points) May 19th, 2019

No matter what brand I look up: Trane, Carrier or whatever all I see are complaints like they don’t make them like they used to and all brands are trash. What brand should I get ? TIA

Why not just replace the compressor on the unit you have right now?

When the compressor dies it’s usually a signal to replace the system, especially if it’s more then a decade old. I’m a fan of American standard.

Trane had some serious problems with some units about 4–5 years ago, but I’ve heard it is corrected. This is from builders I know. Carrier and Trane are the best known brands, been around forever. I think they care about their reputation, and I would stick to one of them if it were me.

We have a Mitsubishi at the office.

@ragingloli Mitsubishi have subcontracted to China for parts, many times in the last 12 years repair parts were impossible to get and some seem to be prone for breakage (poor materials).

Trane and Carrier are good, it may depend on who does the replacement.

You are going to have to replace the whole system – not just the compressor.

The US has outlawed the type of freon used in older systems – it is much less available now than it was 5 years ago, and it is going to get rarer and much more expensive in the next year or two. Nobody is going to sell you a compressor for a system where freon supplies won’t be available for the life of the unit.

So get ready to bay serious cash for a replacement system. American Standard is a good name.

This air conditioning man came out and said our breaker went bad-you know, the ones in the breaker box in the garage. So my poor husband is braving this 89 degree heat to get a new breaker . Glad my grandson is with him.
I never heard of a bad breaker.

We had a breaker go 13 months after we bought a new house !

The electrician said it happens, breaker is cheaper than an A/C.

Good that it failed the way it did. Better that than one not operate properly when it needs to.

He added a lot of freon and disconnected a wire that had to do with the sump heater.
Oh, well. It’s cold now!
