Are there any websites I can go to that could help me get bad websites shut down?

Asked by Bootsiebaby (146points) January 15th, 2020

By that I mean sites run by unscrupulous admin who delight in falsely accusing members of violations we haven’t committed. Can anyone help?

Unless the website in question is violating laws or anything of the sort, no. Unfortunately, it’s sort of a “my house, my rules” thing when it comes to websites. Admins can run it however they want. If it isn’t anything violating the law you probably won’t get it shut down.

You get to vote with your mouse: go somewhere else, and let that website wither away from lack of customers.

^^^Yeah. Eventually people will get sick of the BS admins and will leave, and that may lead to them closing the site. Other than that, you can’t do anything.

Don’t visit (navigate) to websites which you know to be unscrupulous.

@SergeantQueen

“Admins can run it however they want”

But when they commit false accusation they can’t be allowed to get away with that. It’s not fair to any of their members if they are going to behave like that.

@zenvelo and si3tech

I want something positive doing about it. Your suggestions are neither the Manchester way nor the Scorpio way, and I happen to be a Scorpio from Manchester.

SergeantQueen's avatar

Okay, neither your zodiac sign nor your location matters.
No, it’s not fair for them to do those things, but if it is a site that they’ve created or are admins of, they can do what they want and you either have to deal with it, or leave and warn others. You cannot forcibly shut them down.
If there are people higher up the chain than them, contact them and see if can get things to change, otherwise you got to suck it up

Dont go to websites that don’t treat you nicely. The site has an owner and you don’t have to like how he runs his site.

Bootsiebaby's avatar

@Sagacious: Please don’t downplay the seriousness of this. If they go around falsely accusing innocent people of other people’s violations (or even nonexistent violations) then they should be closed down to protect their innocent victims.

Bootsiebaby's avatar

@SergeantQueen: Of course my zodiac sign and location matter. You don’t honestly expect a Scorpio to “suck it up”, do you? Especially not in Manchester.

SergeantQueen's avatar

@Bootsiebaby
Contact site owners. If they don’t do anything, leave the site and warn others.
I won’t argue with you on why your zodiac and location is irrelevant. I’m a Sagittarius from Waukesha and I don’t take shit either. Which is why I’d just leave the site and warn others instead of trying to take the whole site down.
I don’t take a lot of shit but I also pick my battles. This isn’t one worth fighting beyond talking to site owners. After that, leave it be.

SergeantQueen's avatar

^^^assuming site owners and admins are separate, other wise the rest applies

Sagacious's avatar

@Bootsiebaby I disagree 100% with you. What are you, part of the internet cops? Stay away from sites you don’t like. Everyone can take care of themselves. Or not. It’s called culling the herd.

Bootsiebaby's avatar

@Sagacious: That means you agree 100% with false accusation. Do you mind if I ask why?

SergeantQueen's avatar

@Bootsiebaby @Sagacious Did not say that.
For the love of everything, stop trying to argue with us. You cannot take down a website. Leave it and move on.

SergeantQueen's avatar

NOBODY likes false accusations
NOBODY likes website run by assholes.
THAT is why you LEAVE the site and MOVE ON

Not that I know of. Tell you what, why don’t we create one?

@Glambarber That’s a brilliant idea.
