Well your Ipod should take any video that is in the MPEG-4 format. You can get some great programs to covert and video to this format such as Handbrake (free) or Toast 9.

MrBlogger's avatar

No I do that. Now after update it seems as though now Apple wants me to buy their content. OH POO

sethmedia's avatar

What Generation is your iPod? And are you on windows or Mac?

MrBlogger's avatar

My question says iPhone. Im using Mac of course.

Tantigirl's avatar

I had the same problem with my iPod. Try this:

In iTunes, click on the movie that won’t sync, then click on advanced at the top of the page. You then click on convert selection for iPod/iPhone.

That is what fixed mine. Doing the conversion can take quite a while though, depending on what it is your are converting, it could take hours.

MrBlogger's avatar

Latest iTunes version 7.7.1 I just updated

MrBlogger's avatar

I did that. I always would do that and I still have iPhone converted video waiting for me in the library. Look at my screenshot too. http://img.skitch.com/20080901-qpwkt473bdc6bcianh1pkdesxn.jpg

Tantigirl's avatar

Hmmm, thats interesting. I haven’t had that one, it just wouldn’t sync onto my iPod, I had the window pop up with the list of what it didn’t like. What did you use to convert your movies?

MrBlogger's avatar

iTunes. What you said. Also some of my videos were converted from iMovie too. Theres an option to save for iPhone. Now I cant. The itunes Video section when i plug in my iPhone wont give me the option to sync videos that I have.

MrBlogger's avatar

I guess Apple will let me have the option back sooner or later after al the advertising of easy syncing from iMovie. Its probably a glitch or something.

Tantigirl's avatar

I meant what did you use to format the things you didn’t buy from iTunes.

MrBlogger's avatar

I used the iTunes convert for iPhone option. It would work before.

Tantigirl's avatar

Are you formatting from DVDs?

MrBlogger's avatar

No but I did do that once and it worked perfectly. Now I usually just download videos off the internet and convert them. (Movies, Youtube videos, Tv Shows)

Tantigirl's avatar

I don’t know what else to suggest, I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help to you.

MrBlogger's avatar

Its okay. Thanks for you effort! :)

joeysefika's avatar

What convertor are you using? Using the inbuilt VLC convertor i managed to change an AVI to MP4 import it and sync. Perhaps if you try deleting and re-downloading iTunes this could fix the problem.

MrBlogger's avatar

I did. I guess its just Apple who removed this option. Ill just have to wait until it comes back. Im using iMovie and even used to use iTunes to convert and it used to work well.

joeysefika's avatar

Thats mighty weird, I’m using 7.7.1 and i just tried again to convert a video from AVI to MP4, chucked it into iTunes and it synced perfectly. Try using VLC’s convertor it’s very good

edit :: it will convert a 30min tv show in less than 10 min

MrBlogger's avatar

:O Really?! Maybe do you think its just the iPhone and iPod touch? Look at my screen shot. Before iTunes would show me my Video library in the Video section when the iPhones plugged in. Are you using an iPhone?

MrBlogger's avatar

Ill try Vnc

joeysefika's avatar

Yea I have an iPhone. With ‘VLC’ go file—> streaming and xporting wizard—> then input all your settings. Use mpeg-4 video 1024 bit rate and mpeg-4 audio 192 bit rate

MrBlogger's avatar

Thanks for the help but it didnt work. I solved the problem though. Very strange. I had to click manually manage music and videos then drag the video in the iPhone. Wierd.

MrBlogger's avatar

Its actually allot faster doing it this way

yannick's avatar

Ok, so, I hate to suggest this because it seems blatantly obvious, and maybe I’ve missed something major, but what the heck: you do realise that you can scroll down in the window you have taken a screenshot of, right?

Under the ‘Movies’ tab, the rented movies are listed first, followed by TV Shows. But if you just scroll down a bit, the movies are there.

This is how it looks in iTunes for me. Firstly, an [almost] identical screenshot to yours here. As you can see, there is a scrollbar on the right, which would lead me to believe that there is more. Could this be?!?! Let me brush by mouse’s scroll wheel…

Oh… oh… OH! Oh no he didn’t!

… ... ...

Oh yes he did! Ta-daa!

If the movies aren’t listed in that bottom box like they are for me, read one of the millions of answers above (like you probably already have). However my guess is either the ‘sync’ box next to movies is unchecked, OR none of the movies in the sync box are checked. Doing either of the above should enable you to once again sync your movies onto your iPhone without ever having to worry about Apple trying to elaborately rip you off ever again. Ahem. =P

MrBlogger's avatar

I was exited for a second. Until it synced everything exept my videos! :( Whats going on. The video format is fine. Its convereted fine, I know that because I used to have no problem but it wont even sync. All are checked. Its set to sync checked content but it wont work! Why?!

MrBlogger's avatar

Haha I guess I just started to worry and didnt even notice I could scroll down. How stupid of me. Anyways it still wont sync. Well at least I can do it manually. Its actually allot allot faster too. It takes a second to get it on the Phone

yannick's avatar

Give us a screenshot of that part of your screen then (the scroll down one), as well as one of the main tab when you plug your phone in (e.g. where it gives you the phone’s name, software version, etc etc.) Then we might be able to find out what the problem is.

MrBlogger's avatar

Alright. Im going to sync my iPhone tonight so Ill post screenshots in a few hours. Thanks for all your help. =]

Ok…I am very confused. I used HandBrake to convert one of my DVD’s to an MP4…but when I go to my itunes it will show the movie in the library, but when I try to click ont he box next to the movie to add it to the ipod touch it won’t let me. In Handbrake I specified for it to convert for an Ipod, but it still doesn’t sync??

Tantigirl's avatar

@kris75614 – I had the same problem when I converted mine using DVDFab. Check out my first posting in this question, that is what I did and it worked fine after that.

kris75614's avatar

I did that also…went to advanced and re-converted the movie. I see now that there’s a second one listed (the originally converted one, and the one I converted in itunes), and neither one of them will sync. I have no idea what is wrong. There are podcasts that downloded just fine that were free from itunes, so I know the device is working ok…just not the movie.

kris75614's avatar

By the way..I am using itunes version 8.0 if that makes a difference. I was looking for a screen on mine that looks like the screen shots that yannick posted a few answers up, but I don’t see that on mine. I am brand new to this so maybe I just don’t see it yet. On mine everything is on the left hand side (playlists, my device info, all the categories for music, movies, podcasts…etc).

kris75614's avatar

ok! I think I got it!! Sorry for being a space cadet….I am all over knowing how to download music to the nano…but the touch is new and the video aspect is something I have never dealt with before. Thank you so much for the help!!!

justin5824's avatar

You can also use iSquint (free) of Visual Hub (29$) from the same company to do conversions.

MrBlogger's avatar

Okay I guess it was my iTunes because after the iTunes update it works! :)

I synced with a mac, and wish to now sync with a pc, but iphone does not sync, although itunes says syncing

pnoi's avatar

i’ve found the answer!....i can now sync music videos to my iphone3g…...first, open your itunes and highlight the video you wanna sync…..second, right click and choose the “Get Info” menu….in the “Summary Tab” and make sure the “Kind” is in mp4 or m4v format…....third, go to the Options Tab and under “Media Kind” choose Music Video…...the video will then automatically move to the Music Video Playlist…..from there, drag and drop to the folder you wanna sync your iPod or iPhone with…..sounds simple but I missed these details the first time…...hope this helps guys…..

scootter82's avatar

Actually, if you look at the screen shot, all you would have had to do is scroll down! Hahahahahahahah. The movies section is under the tv shows section

challenger's avatar

pnoi nailed it. I have a Mac. I only had to highlight each video individually, click “Command-I,” click “Options” in the box that brought up, and change “Media Kind” from “Movie” to “Music Video.” And now I can finally get all those great old live concert videos and play them on my iPod!
