Did you listen to Boris Johnson's news conference last night?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33170points) May 1st, 2020

It’s available on CSPAN if you want to listen here

Compare his demeanor and information to the shlock that Donald Trump puts out. Day and night.

Are you willing to learn from other politicians besides Trump?

I catch Andrew Cuomo clips from time to time. I think he’s doing great. Not especially interested in Johnson. I don’t watch Trump at all.

No, he makes me want to throw things at the tellybox & it cost a lot!

@ucme
He is the best leader your country ever had!

He reminds me too much of trump. I don’t watch trump so I definitely don’t watch johnson

@SEKA what was striking to me is that Johnson was erudite, polite, and self effacing. And he was prepared with useful information.

The contrast with how Trump speaks was noticeable, even striking.

And I was totally anti-Johnson and anti-brexit. But Johnson surprised me.

^ Think it might have anything to do with his near death experience?

Wasn’t the PM slow to get on board with the COVID advice from health officials, fairly arrogant, until he himself got sick? Or, am I mixing him p with a different leader?

I watch my governor, because he affects me most, and I think he is overall very good, contrary to popular thought among Democrats. He was slow to take action in the beginning, although he was consistent with information and advice, but when people were being obstinate and not heeding his advisory he was slow to put in an order. That reluctance to put in orders was a problem. He always supported the stricter orders in various counties and cities though that had very high caseloads.

He is EXTREMELY data and statistics driven. He cites South Korean as the gold standard, which means to me he does do research. He recently cited Sweden and other countries that have returned children to school as countries and we can watch and learn from to see if the spread of the virus will be among adults. He continues to tightly protect long term health facilities, including increasing testing among the employees. He hired infectious disease experts early on to analyze the nursing homes and make suggestions, because he knew from the data they were at the highest risk. He does have some politics in him unfortunately, throwing out a dog whistle now and then, ugh, but he also has an analytical brain thankfully.

He also laid out how many tests being done in my state, percentages they will be watching, the willingness to tighten rules back up if the cases begin to go up again, AND he still advises people not to have a ten person dinner party, even though the order of no more than ten is still in place. He calls even these small dinner parties high risk, he cites the big outbreaks from large funerals, choir practice, and church services high risk, even though he will not order churches closed. He has never closed retail stores, but he has the order to distance, so if your business means you cannot distance, then yes you are unable to conduct business.

Unfortunately, people have selective listening and the media reporting is selective too.

Two links below, if you only watch one of the youtubes watch the second one, it’s shorter, and gives the same general idea without so much conversation and details, and I do recommended listening through to when he answers questions from the press.

Here he is announcing initial plans for opening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oE2HFrZIwqo

Here is he more recently opening the state parks and talking about additional statistics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDrgaIsR1w0 He discusses the Jacksonville Beaches opening.

You’ll see little political jabs, again that bothers me, but overall I feel like he is trying to open the state in a measured way.

He has a degree from Yale, a law degree from Harvard, was a JAG lawyer in the navy, is a Catholic (I think this might help since the Pope has promoted being safe and caring about the health of others) I do think he has a brain in his head.

I was watching Cuomo initially, but I don’t as much anymore. I watch Trump once in a while to hear for myself, rather than spin in the TV and social media.

@ragingloli Wrong!
He’s fantastic at being a human & handled Brexit as it should have been from the start but his handling of this virus outbreak has been fucking outstandingly bad!

Great bloke, love to have a drink with him but he ain’t no leader.
