Why does Word hang my computer up?

If my computer starts dogging and running really slow I can be sure I have Word open some where. It takes FOREVER to shut it down too, but when I do, everything frees right up.
Anybody know why that is?

Chance are it is the spellcheck or some add-on. Do you have the latest update on your PC of Word ? Also latest update of Microsoft Windows? Word is known to hog the CPU because of spellcheck.
