When was the last time that an American or Canadian has been tried for blasphemy or Heresy?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24474points) December 23rd, 2020

Just grateful that I haven’t been charged with either.
Also may you please show a list of countries that have both or one of them on the books?

As far as I know, it has never happened in the U.S or Canada. Freedom of speech and freedom of religion allow you to say whatever you want about religion. Some Islamic countries punish people for blasphemy.

@LostInParadise is correct—religious freedom is why this country was founded.

No one has been charged with heresy or blasphemy.

pre-Revolution. Like in the 1700s or so.

Individual religions (the conservative Mormons) do it now, and some Baptist sects will throw people out of the church for their beliefs. As do the Catholics. But that’s not government doing it.

Possibly back in the 17th Century. I’d have to research that. Those Putitans could be hell on wheels.

Yes, though that pre-dates the formation of the USA. There were the Salem Witch Trials in 1692–1693, though the charges were witchcraft rather than heresy. The US Constitution supposedly grants freedom of religion. Some of the colonies were founded for the purpose of escaping religious prosecution, but in order to practice their own forms of religion, which could be quite intolerant. E.g. see also The Scarlet Letter.

Never since either country was founded. We don’t live in a theocracy.

The question was about present and past, not hypothetical futures. I answered accordingly.

wasn’t being critical, just adding a pessimistic gloss.
