What would you do if you had a litter of pupies without knowing your dog found a male dog?

Asked by KRD (5259points) March 24th, 2022

Some family members have a laberdoodle who’s related to Kevin (my dog) and had a litter of pups because a dog next door to them jumped the fence and they both got in love. What would you do if that happened to you?

Try to find homes for them. What else is there to do?

Go to media and see if anybody wants a puppy.

While looking for homes for the puppies, take the mother to the vet and have her spayed.

That’s how I found my best ever dog!!! Mom was a registered Golden Retriever with papers out her rear. Dad was a registered German Shepherd with papers more impressive than mom. Well, when they fell in love, dad jumped the fence & lo & behold, some of the most precious mutts you have ever seen appeared!!!

The owners of both mom & dad had been seeing $$$ in front of their eyes because of the dogs impeccable breeding. Boy were they surprised when these fluffy Golden Shepherds emerged from hiding. Of course mamma had 15 of them little suckers!!! I used to laugh that I had me a pedigreed mutt & I got him for FREE!!!

Now, to answer your Q, put signs up around your neighborhood saying “free puppies”. Where I live, flea markets are very popular & many people show up with a box full of puppies just waiting for the little kids to show up.

My vet has a bulletin board just for such events. Take a pic of mom & dad with the puppies surrounding them, put them up on his board, & the phone will start ringing. Might be an idea to talk to your vet…worst response you’ll get is NO.

You can have a yard sale with puppies for FREE…OR…advertise it on FB!!!

I would, like @janbb, find suitable homes for them.

Good advice above.
I like how you wrote they were in love!

Michael Vick’s house was considered to be a suitable home for the dogs he adopted until it was discovered that more than 50 had been used for dog fighting

What @zenvelo said. If you don’t want puppies, you have to get them fixed. Two owners made the same mistake so need to fix it together. Each finds homes for half the puppies!

Interview people intelligently to find appropriate parents for the puppies, don’t just hand them out at flea markets, street corners or parking lots. Ask the people to come to your house, not over the phone, and talk to them about dogs in general for 30 minutes or so. Present situations and see what they would do. Watch carefully how they interact with puppies and mom. That would probably rule out at least some of the potentially disastrous parents. It’s easy to ‘get rid of puppies’, it takes patience and compassion to do it right for the pups’ futures.

@smudges NOT everybody is abusive toward their pets. One of my cats was adopted at a flea market & she lived to be 22 when she died of old age. She was spoiled rotten during those 22 years!!! As @SEKA pointed out, there are abusive people hiding behind privileged closed doors & I’m sure had Vick shown up at your door & passed on his I’m rich, got a good home, & I love dogs that you would have handed him a puppy in less than 30 minutes. He would have then taken that precious pup home to turn a mean, fighting dog on it over & over until it died. Check the pics of Vick’s victims. One fighting dog had half his snout ripped off. There is NO ideal situation & I only mentioned flea markets as a possible solution. You’d be surprised what you can learn about people simply watching them in a situation where they feel comfortable just being themselves!!!

That’s so true! I’m not saying you can positively eliminate any potential abusers by using my suggestions, but it’s what many dog professionals and humane societies do.

Condolences to you and your kitty. I had 2 that I rescued from a ‘pound’ that lived to be 17, so I understand your feelings.
