Why do guys spit so much?

Asked by RayaHope (7448points) September 17th, 2022

I was following two guys down the sidewalk today and they kept spitting on the sidewalk. Clearing their throats and spitting again. ewwww They could have spit on the grass or even in a napkin or something, but right on the walk?! This isn’t the first time either, they do this other places too. grrrr

I think it’s like peeing on stuff. We’re just leaving little messages to critters that have a good sense of smell that we were here.

Ggggggggkkk.

Which guys? Find yourself a better crowd. Believe me, they DO exist.

I think men just feel more free to do it (I saw this a lot with guys in high school, less so as I got older, but I do know guys who do it). I don’t think there’s a biological reason, i.e. that men have more saliva/phlegm to dispose of. Lol

I only do it when out on a run, it’s kind of inevitable due to the exertion expanded.

@gorillapaws You mean guys walk around peeing on stuff?? ewwww

gorillapaws's avatar

@RayaHope Yes. Men pee on things—obviously not all men, and certainly not all of the time.

Why don’t gals spit more?

RayaHope's avatar

@SnipSnip I don’t because I am more dignified than that. I think it’s gross and disrespectful of others that may step unto it. I’m not saying one should NEVER spit if needed, just do it into a tissue or something sanitary.

They were using chewing tobacco, makes you spit. I spit across the street yes
that far because…

Never spit and walk on the same sidewalk.

I get dust and irritants in my mouth all the time. I will buy some portable Kleenex wipes next time I go shopping. Thanks for the heads up.

Too much of that Kodiak chewing tobacco.

I mean, I’m a guy, and I almost never spit. Certainly not without a good reason (like spitting out toothpaste after brushing). I don’t think any of my friends or associates do, either. Neither do we chew tobacco.

After witnessing this once, I went home, stayed outside, and gave it a go. All I could manage was an unpleasant dribble of spit down the chin. Never could get any distance. 8\

Not all guys do this.

Smashley's avatar

Probably they smoke weed or tobacco. Excess phlegm can happen for a lot of reasons, but these are most likely. Probably not chewing tobacco because they wouldn’t be clearing their throats for those spits.

I think my biggest concern is why spit right on the walk when they could turn 2 degrees and at least spit on the grass. Not on the walk for others to walk through :(

Forever_Free's avatar

I would ask them. Maybe it’s a medical condition known as adolescence.
Some guys never grow up.

WhyNow's avatar

@RayaHope Not on the grass! What if I want to walk barefoot on the grass?

RayaHope's avatar

@WhyNow Okay I did suggest a napkin would be best :)

One flight I sat next to a guy who did chewing tobacco during the entire flight. He kept spitting into his Coke bottle. Kind of gross. At least he closed the bottle after every spit, I guess in case he dropped it.

RayaHope's avatar

I can’t imagine having a gross habit like that. Why didn’t he just wait until the flight was over to do that somewhere private. ewww

gorillapaws's avatar

@RayaHope If he’s addicted to nicotine, the chewing tobacco or dip would allow him to fly and get his nicotine fix without having to smoke. The chewing tobacco makes you salivate like crazy and you can’t swallow it or you’ll puke—thus the spitting.

Personally, I find spitting to be gross. But that’s probably because I grew up in a western culture and in this certain window of time.

I can’t remember the exact article I read. But if you google “spitting” and “history”, you get a lot of interesting results on how spitting has evolved through history and across different cultures.
