This begs the question: respected to whom?

I respect Buddhist and Hindu holy men of certain reputation or stature.

I respect President Biden. I respect PM Trudeau.

I respect my doctor. I greatly respect my therapist.

I would put firefighters up at number 1. Other professions that were previously looked upon with respect such as politicians, doctors and police have since lost their respect due to others in their profession giving them a bad name.
I feel that teachers need more respect and pay than they are given.
It’s all a matter of perspective.

I guess it depends on whom is doing the respecting. It has changed drastically over the decades.

You won’t find politicians on my list. For those of you who don’t respect the police but put fire fighters at #1 you should realize that their mentality is the same and that both face significant stress but police have a higher suicide rate and higher incidence of PSTD. You can throw first responders under that umbrella too. I respect all the different first responders. The technicians, engineers and tradesmen that get called out in the middle of the night to keep your lights on. They’re pretty far up there if you asked me.

@Forever_Free You had damned well better respect her! “Ouch! Thank you Mistress, may I have another?”

@Hawaii_Jake I heard that firefighters where number one in the news years ago. Your preference is ok. I would say in the context of the media.

Firefighters seemed to gain a lot of respect after 9/11. Nurses and other medical professionals seemed to gain a lot of respect during and since the pandemic.

Police used to be highly respected but seemed to lose a lot of respect after the George Floyd murder and since there are more incidents of police brutality on video (starting with Rodney King in the 1990s).

I’m trying to think of what professions I personally respect. I respect the individual person more. I worked as a caseworker for many years, and there were really great, hardworking ones and there were many overzealous, authoritarian ones who thought they were the Judge and the Jury. I respect a lot of tradesmen, who work hard, and work long hours, but in that profession, there are ones that are liars and cheaters. There are wonderful, caring clergymen, but there are some that used that power to molest children.

Just thinking about it, I respect the individual more than I can say I respect any one particular profession.

Nurses. Great answer! The things I have seen them deal with!
Firefighters. They run towards the danger. That requires a special mindset.
Teachers.

Many of those who respect clergy might look down on scientists and vice versa.

janbb's avatar

I tend not to respect the profession but the practitioner of any profession who is worthy of respect.
