Disco inferno! (Burn baby burn!)

LadyMarissa's avatar

Although Disco wasn’t my favorite genre, I would survive ;-) listening to it 24/7/365!!! I could listen to the BeeGees for the rest of my days & not even flinch. Donna Summer & Gloria Gaynor wouldn’t be all that bad either. I used to listen too a lot of Earth, Wind & Fire; however KC & the Sunshine Band would have to go!!! It wasn’t their music that I disliked but KC himself made me feel ill every time he opened his mouth!!!

^^ I, too, wouldn’t mind a number of those artists. Never heard of 6 of them. I went through a phase when I loved going dancing to disco with my gay male friends.

Bust a move.

With all that polyester, no wonder you’d have an inferno! lol

I love it. I love Sylvester and I love the cuts that weren’t so well known but were more on “urban radio” stations.

Also, closely related, I love Freestyle.

A lesser known one but you hear this sampled sometimes:

OMG, I love you @jca2 for naming Sylvester right off the bat! I do a zumba routine to You Make Me Feel Might Real. I actually have the Communards version, but Sylvester was awesome, and he gets all the credit for that song, and I am sure the Communards would agree.

I like a lot of 70’s music. I wouldn’t suffer too much if only Disco songs were available. There is music I like more than Disco, but Disco has a lot of great songs for dancing, and I love to dance.

Here’s another great one by Sylvester, @JLeslie

Do Ya Wanna Funk -

One of my all time favorites – Teena Marie, I need your lovin

JLeslie's avatar

Yeah, I know Do You Wanna Funk very well. I mostly went to gay dance clubs in the ‘80’s and all that music was played. So much fun. We have a ‘70’s band here that is pretty good, but I haven’t heard them play any Sylvester. I should suggest it.

I totally forgot about Cuba, until I saw you write it here. That would be a great song to remake with Latin crossover being so popular.

This is the shit – Teena Marie – Behind the Groove

I don’t remember it.

Boogie Wonderland and It’s Raining Men.

My husband LOVES the Bee Gees. The knock-off Bee Gees band comes through here every year, and we miss it every year. One of these days we will get to see it.

jca2's avatar

@JLeslie Good documentary on Netflix (I think it was Netflix) about the Bee Gees. About how they were kind of in a slump, music wise, and then Saturday Night Fever came along and they had a big rejuvenation of their fame.

JLeslie's avatar

I think I saw that same documentary. They were incredible. Did you see the tribute to the Bee Gees a few years ago? Famous singers were taking turns doing various Bee Gees songs, and Barry was in the audience and he was smiling and singing along with them. It was great. Sad that his brothers died fairly young.

jca2's avatar

I didn’t see that one – maybe I’ll look for it online.

Yes, sad that the other Bee Gees and Andy Gibb died so young. Andy was so cute, too.

JLeslie's avatar

I think this is it. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=grammys+tribute+to+the+beegees&view=detail&mid=95255E45E55E3C01BE8095255E45E55E3C01BE80&FORM=VIRE

Edit: Especially the last half, the audience gets up and dances and are totally into it if I remember correctly. A room full of famous people.

Dig_Dug's avatar

My Spidey sense tells me that @jca2 just may be a little bit into disco, not sure must do more research..

JLeslie's avatar

I don’t think @jca2 linked You Make Me Feel. Here it is. https://youtu.be/gD6cPE2BHic

Always loved this song. This is part of why trans people have always been part of my normal. Singers like Sylvester and all the clubs I went to in the ‘80’s. I was born in the late ‘60’s, so the ‘70’s I was a very young girl.

JLeslie's avatar

Sylvester should be listed for Black History month. He was brave, being an openly gay Black man and cross dressing. You see how happy he was performing.

He was raised in the church, but was driven to follow his path. Here’s a ten minute biography. He was one of the people we lost to AIDS in the beginnings of that disease. So very sad. Martha Wash is in the video, I had forgotten about her. Also, a clip of Joan Rivers interviewing him on the Tonight Show. His mom is in it too. She talks about being proud of him. https://youtu.be/k_By3E4BH00

Love it! I’d be a PT dancing queen.

jca2's avatar

@Dig_Dug Here’s another great one by Donna Summer – MacArthur Park. Here’s the live version.

What’s incredible about the disco people like Donna Summer and Sylvester is there weren’t any artificial vocal tracks like today – what you hear is what they sang like. Donna Summer and Sylvester both had great voices.

^^omg, that is one of the most nonsensical songs ever written! Jimmy Webb must have been doin’ some great shrooms that day!

Disco lovers will remember this one – Evelyn Champagne King – I’m In Love:

@Dig_Dug When you read what MacArthur Park was written about, it makes more sense haha:

If the world only had disco then I could be the one to create other music!

SnipSnip's avatar

It could be so much worse. I would survive.

Dig_Dug's avatar

@jca2 He sure was worried about that cake…lol!

rockfan's avatar

Create my own band and record a lot of rock music.

Jons_Blond's avatar

I wouldn’t listen. I’d have to listen to the sounds of nature and I’d be fine with that.
