Why do people named Enrique called Kiki?

Asked by amarsoni25 (66points) October 23rd, 2023

Kiki, Kike. Other than being a shorter alternative, what is the history and origin of the nickname? Thanks.

I found online that kiki is the nickname for any name with a K sound. So names with K, or C’s that sound like k or Q. Like Angelique, or Dominique or Nicole or Katrina. Though Nikk, or Niki is more common for names like Angelique, Dominique, or Nicole.

Might have come from when they were children. Either Enrique or a younger sibling couldn’t properly say the name. They heard the “k” sound and pronounced the name “Kiki”. And it stuck.

My brother in law’s name is Enrique. I’ve known Enrique for 35 years. I’ve heard people call him Henry but never heard him called “Kiki”.

“Kike” is not an appropriate word, just FYI.

This reminds me of “In My Feelings – Kiki do you love me” by Drake.

Just like Liz and Betty are good for Elizabeth. And a cook named Ignacio invented Nachos.

Jack for John makes no sense, though, what’s the deal with that?
