Trump has said if elected he would be a dictator on day one, why does that not scare his base?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23124points) December 19th, 2023

Will it be the end of democracy if he gets elected?
Trump has admired dictators for quite some time.

Not to mention his recent statement saying immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” parroting Adolf Hitler, as well as praising Kim Jong Un, and quoting Vladimir Putin,

It should scare EVERYONE!

That’s exactly what they want in a leader unless that leader leans left!!!They don’t seem to understand that that same leader will turn on them as well & it won’t be near as much fun.

ragingloli's avatar

Because they would love that. When he floated the idea of having an entire dynasty of his spawn inheriting the office like in some neo-monarchy, they were cheering, too.
They are not scared of that, because they are imagining themselves as the beneficiaries of that dictatorship, not the victims, while salivating at the thought of their “enemies” being victimised.
Their motto is “do not tread on me, tread on them”

His fan base can be f#ck*d in their behinds by him and still praise him.
He’s going to win, he’s going to do worse than he did the first time.
And half of the populace will (still) adore him.

”“I didn’t say that. I said I want to be a dictator for one day. You know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall, and I want to drill, drill, drill,” Trump said during the club’s annual gala, according to multiple…..”

They want those two thing’s as well so why would it upset them?

JLeslie's avatar

Why would his base be scared? They will interpret what he said however they want so that it fits in with their beliefs. Belief about him, belief about the world, belief about God, belief about what is best for the country, etc.

Because I don’t think they took it as meaning what the media has been trying to tell people it meant, and in this case, I kind of think the Trumpies are right. Trump was awkwardly trying to be funny and bold.

IMHO, Trump’s ACTIONS are more concerning than his words. He’s done multiple things where he shows no respect for the legal bounds of his position. Him claiming fraud while not producing any evidence for three years is bad form, and disqualifying in my eyes from being an elected official (yes, I think the same of Al Gore and Stacey Abrams). But the thing that elevates it from ‘bad form’ to ‘holy shit, lock this guy up!’ is that he wasn’t willing to limit his irresponsible behavior to the legally available courses of action. He tried to get public officials to violate their duties to benefit him.

If someone doesn’t care about about living in a democracy to care about stuff like that…some awkward public statements aren’t really going to register on their radar.

Got a citation for the actual speech where he supposedly made this claim?

jca2's avatar

It was an interview where he was asked about the current thinking that he will turn his next presidency into a dictatorship. His response was “only on Day 1” and then he went on to outline the drill drill drill and a few other things, @seawulf. I saw it shown a bunch of times on regular nightly news.

I’m going to be busy for the rest of the day, otherwise I’d research and link it. Hopefully someone else can.

seawulf575's avatar

@jca2 Thanks for the offer. I can search too. But as often as I get asked for proof and citations, I figure other jellies that ask questions, especially provocative ones, could provide the citations that made them think of the question to begin with.

What I found sounds very much like Trump did NOT say he would be a dictator. What he said, pretty clearly, is that on day 1 he would close the southern border and start things in motion to increase oil production. That was his answer to the question “Will you become a dictator?” “Except on Day 1.” When questioned about what he meant he responded that on Day 1 he would close the border and drill, drill, drill.

Sorry, other than the fear-mongering from the left (as they do with Trump all the time) and the efforts to read more into it (as they do with Trump all the time), he said nothing that implies dictatorship.

^^Are you deaf and blind to trump-turd? He’s the ultimate fear-mongerer with his statements!

seawulf575's avatar

@mazingerz88 No, the fear mongering is from folks like you. You are so obsessed with Trump hatred that you try to make everything a crisis and a threat. He’s going to close the border! Hair on fire!!!!! He’s going to drill for oil! Sky is falling!!! End of the universe!!!!!!!!!

This entire question is nothing but fear mongering. There are safeguards in place to prevent Trump from unilaterally becoming a dictator. Not to mention he has always done what a POTUS is supposed to do…work through congress to achieve goals. But if you mention Trump being some evil creature on these pages and the foaming at the mouth starts.

jca2's avatar

The seeds of these thoughts were planted when Trump was calling election officials after the last election, looking for votes, then Jan 6, telling the people in his speech to “fight like hell” and asking Pence to overturn the election. That’s the root of all this current thought.

Don’t Y’All just love politics!

mazingerz88's avatar

@seawulf575 You’re totally ignoring trump-turd’s fear mongering. Which leads to people’s simply natural reactions. This is his game. He knows it. You know it.

You are making it acceptable the freedom of a douchebag to mock and play dangerous games in US politics. You are unaware you are suffering from trump worship.

seawulf575's avatar

@mazingerz88 No, what I see is not what the fear mongers on the left see. I interpreted his statement to mean that on Day one of his presidency he was going to be completely directive about sealing the border and re-opening drilling that Biden closed down. That is not a dictator. It is not possible for a dictator to rise up in this country unless they have control of the secret police and the media. You know…like Biden has. Biden, or more precisely the Democrat Party, is far more a threat to democracy than Trump ever was. Who is it that is weaponizing the government against a political opponent? You on the left screamed when it was claimed Trump did that (which was quickly proven to be a false claim) and yet you sit by rooting as the Dems do it. That isn’t democracy…it is the start of a dictatorship.

@jca2 The seeds of these thoughts were planted when Trump won in 2016. It has been an irrational fear of Trump that leads to this. It is lies by the media that have led to these thought. It is sham accusations and kangaroo courts that lead to thoughts like these. It is the complete melt down by those on the left that try to take things said out of context even to the point of falsifying reports just to hate Trump. Your comment shows many of things like this. It is rife with falsehoods that have been reported over and over and over again. Trump told the people that we (he and his team) will fight like hell to prevent a false election from taking place. That was the discussion. It was about the corruption in the government and all the irregularities surrounding the 2020 election. Many of which are starting to be exposed even to this date. But it doesn’t sound right to say that if you are trying to stir up the public against Trump. It is so much better if you just say he was calling for violence. Hell, I’ve even hear jellies on these pages say his speech sounded like it wasn’t calling for violence but the phrases he used were just dog whistles…codes that all his followers know meant to start violence. Does that sound sane or rational to you? As for asking Pence to overturn the election, that is not what was being asked. He was asking for Pence to not certify the election without sending many of the results back to the states to verify. That is, after all, one of the duties of the POTUS…to ensure fair elections are held. But if you phrase it that way it sounds like a more reasonable action. If you say he was asking to overturn an election it puts meaning into things that wasn’t there.

seawulf575's avatar

@janbb Imagine what that means to me.

janbb's avatar

^^ I know, that’s why it was so easy to say.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@seawulf575 Trump’s still at 66% so I guess you’re in good company. :)

chyna's avatar

trump had 4 years to close the boarder. He didn’t.

seawulf575's avatar

@chyna That partly goes back to the Dems. Remember them fighting tooth and nail against building the wall? Remember the fights against everything Trump wanted to do with the border? Not to mention the Dems and Repubs both are guilty of kicking the can down the road. Both parties have squawked loudly about the need for immigration reform, yet it never happens. In fact that was something Trump did that was distinctly non-dictatorial. Early in his term he pushed for Congress to reform the immigration policies to get control of things. Both parties danced for awhile but did nothing.

And Trump can only do so much as POTUS. It actually is Congress that needs to make the border a priority. For Trump to do it by himself would be taking dictatorial actions.

chyna's avatar

Oops, I meant border not boarder.

janbb's avatar

I would have to say that on immigration policy, I think both parties have failed abysmally and the problem is kicked down the road by each administration for many years.

JLeslie's avatar

Immigration won’t likely be solved as long as it gets votes. Both parties have used it as a wedge issue. If you get some Democrats in office who don’t care about being elected again, maybe they will push through some real reform. Or, if NY loses a lot of seats to Republicans the Democrats might shift a little if the media talks about immigration as being one of the reasons Democrats are losing.
