You can’t go wrong with Charcoal Gray or Navy.

It depends on the job.

Is the guy (you?) applying to be the assistant to a fashion editor of a mens magazine? Or wanting to be a lawyer in a small law firm?

In general, I would recommend basic black. Dress it up w/ the shirt and tie.

Black, grey, or navy!

There was a study shown years ago (can’t remember where – but it was when my husband was searching for a job and going on interviews) that said navy blue was the suit of success for interviews. White shirt and a tie that wasn’t too out there. Conservative. It worked. He got the job.

black, navy, and if you want to make a real impression powder blue :-)

Depending on your coloring, black can be too stark, leading to a mortician look. Of course, if that’s the job you’re going for…

Navy. Looks good on almost everyone, nice and formal. Not quite black, but still has the strength of a dark color.

The colour should be one that looks good on you.
Not black though.

Black is too severe, too stark. I actually always notice men in black suits, and it’s not the positive kind of ‘notice’. Only when the suit is perfectly tailored do I like it black.

Personally, I think no matter who you are or what you look like a dark charcoal gray is perfect. And works better than navy with a range of shirt and tie combos.

There have been numerous studies showing blue to get a positive response however. You’re supposed to wear it anytime you’re at the mercy of someone else basically, judges, interviewers, boardrooms, etc.

I would have to go with charcoal or navy. Black is more popular with younger guys, but tends to look a little retail, especially matched with a bold colored shirt and tie. You can never go wrong with a navy or gray suit, white or blue laundered shirt, and snappy small patterned or striped tie. Where I see most young guys miss the boat is on pants length and fit. With a suit, you have to wear the trousers like an old man—up where they belong, not sagging. Hem should break a crease on the top of your shoes, not puddle around your ankles. Black shined shoes—shined! and matching belt. Brown shoes with gray or navy trousers seems to be popular, but looks odd.

You can never miss with lime green or bright orange. Extra points if you wear a ruffled shirt with it.

@alfreda I would also add that the tip of the tie needs to end in the belt buckle. Not tied too long or too short…

@AstroChuck, were you my prom date?

Sociological experiments in the 70’s showed that aggression was reduced in prisoners exposed to pink; raised in prisoners exposed to pale blue.
Therefore, for interview, dress your interviewer in pale blue, and dress yourself in pink.
It’s a no-brainer.

I think black pinstripe suits always looks good on a man just be careful that you don’t come off looking like someone out of the Sorprano’s that could possably damage your chances of getting the job if all else fails then just go in your birthday suit whats the worst that can happen

navy with white shirt and red tie that One never fails

So many people here have it correct. It’s what looks good on you. For me it’s charcoal.
But do yourself a favor and get a high polish shoe shine. Too many “guys” put alot of effort into the suit, shirt and tie and then throw on those same dingy dress shoes they’ve had for 3 years. Hint: If the shoe has taken on a shape it did not have when you bought it, it’s time to replace it. And if you want to look elegant, try brown shoes with a medium grey suit. Ooh!

charcoal or navy. If your feeling adventurous you could to with a colured pin stripe and then match the shirt or tie.

Black looks like your going to a funeral.
