Sore throat remedies?

Asked by Supergirl (1696points) November 16th, 2008

I have an awful sore throat. With ulcers on both sides, and on my uvula. Nodes are size of golf balls. What home remedies do you use for sore throats?

My grandma used to juice a lemon and mix it with honey and use it as cough syrup. Or, alternatively, have me gargle with saltwater.

-Gargle some salt water. Tastes gross but helps a lot.

-Celestial Seasonings makes a wellness tea that always helps me if I add a lot of honey to it.

-And this is really gross, but my mother swears by it. I’ve never tried it. You’re supposed to fry onions and put honey on them, then eat it.

To soothe a sore throat mix a tablespoon of honey in a glass of hot water with the juice of a lemon. Its tastes really good and is good for a sore throat.

Have you been strep tested? You may need an antibiotic. If you let strep go untreated it can damage your heart.

Good heavens, that does sound like strep! I think you may be beyond home remedies. Drag yourself to the doctor.
@ laureth I love your answer! My Mom always made us gargle with salt water. I hated it but it was soothing.

drink some Throat Coat tea by Traditional Medicinals! Tastes great and does the trick!

I agree about Throat Coat tea. It tastes good and is very soothing. I recommend gargling with warm salt water and even incorporating the use of a Neti pot which is great for clearing out nasal mucus. Gargle and Neti for a real cleanse with salts.

Use the Throat Coat tea for the soothe it provides.

Drink clear liquids too.

@krose1223 Absolutely, whisky is the best for a sore throat as long as you aren’t driving or trying to be otherwise productive. I think the alcohol kills the germs along with the pain.

My ear, nose, and throat doctor told me to gargle using a 50/50 solution of peroxide and water; do not swallow it. It works but it is a jolt to the system. Don’t try it if you have a problem with gagging and do not use it for children.
