What makes you get an innie or an outie bellybutton?

Asked by Magnus (2884points) December 16th, 2008

Has it something to do with how the umbilical cord is cut? Or is it absolutely random?

My daughter sees a gastrointestinal doctor and I commented one time that it looks like she has an outie and he said that all belly buttons are innies, but some are just herniated and that is what causes an outie.

This website suggests a few theories to answer your question. One of the theories stated is what @miasmom mentioned.

Innies = not pregnant
Outies = pregnant

@lynzeut I’m pretty sure the question wasn’t talking about while someone is pregnant.

lynzeut's avatar

@hypeserver yep, I got that.

I just wanted to note that it didn’t apply to the question asked. Just trying to be helpful.

lynzeut's avatar

Well it kind of does. Pregnancy can make you have an outie, correct?

hypeserver's avatar

Indeed however appears the question is talking about in general. Not exactly during a pregnancy. Never-the-less it’s not important and we shouldn’t argue over something so minute.

lynzeut's avatar

I didn’t know we were arguing.

I didn’t know what word to use so I used argue perhaps debate would of been a less harsh word. Either way it doesn’t matter.

I seem to remember being told when I was a kid that it has to do with how far from the belly the umbilical cord is tied off on an infant. I’ve never really investigated the veracity of that, though.

I have an outie and I love it.
