Do the different Apple beach balls mean different things?

For example, the multicolored ball that most OS X users are familiar with, the tiny black and white ball that sometimes pops up under the cursor, and the one I just saw which was quartered with light and dark blue sections.

I think the black & white one is Java-specific, but I might be wrong.
