I updated my iPhone on iTunes and it erased all of my contacts !! What do I do?

Asked by missjena (918points) January 17th, 2009 from iPhone

I was on the phone with apple forever yesterday and they couldn’t get my contacts and all my important information back. They told me to ask other iPhone users because this happens. Can anyone get my important information and 400 contacts back?

If you’re on a Mac, all of your contacts should appear in your Address Book (Home>Applications> Address Book). No clue why they wouldn’t sync, but they should still be there.

If you’re on Windows, I’m no help. Good luck!

Did you have it set to sync with Outlook?
Do you have a recent backup on the iPhone?

Everytime u sync Ur iPhone to Ur computer it will automatically make a back up copy of Ur iPhone and all it’s contents on Ur computer after u updated it itunes should have given u an option to restore it from a previous backup

Here are a few options you can try:

Your iPhone backups are located at: c:\Documents and Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

After you have your iPhone connected to your computer, locate the iPhone in the “Devices” column at the left of the iTunes application window.

Right-click on the iPhone icon in the “Devices” column and select “Restore From Backup.” Select one of the backup versions from the drop-down menu and click the “Restore” button.

Or you could do a system restore by typing in restore in the search box at the start menu. This will not erase any personal items such as music or pictures.

Or…settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Import SIM contacts.

Or…you should always keep a list of your contacts saved to a usb, on your computer or in a paper notebook for easy access and backup purposes. There’s this free program called contact keeper which lets you organize names and addresses.

Restore your computer to the day or so before the day you updated. Happened to me too…

PS this has happened to me a few times, always make sure you have a recent restore point on your computer “before” you update Itunes. When your sytems is required to reboot and you notice you no longer have outlook simply restore to theprevious restore point. You contacts should be in outlook and can be transferred to your Iphone if thy were erased.
