If you lived around Norwalk or Anaheim, CA, would you say you lived in Los Angeles?

Asked by cirrina (187points) February 8th, 2009

I mean, are they considered to be suburbs of LA? It’s a little hard to guess from Google maps.

I suppose if one wanted to for ease of recognition by others, one could, but Anaheim’s in Orange County. Norwalk is in LA County. I think most people have heard of Anaheim is because of Disneyland, but not Norwalk. Both of them are their own separate cities.

Norwalk yes, Anaheim no.

No. If people were not familiar with Norwalk, I would say it is near LA.

heck no, OC and LA, two very different things, despite the proximity.

Many people living in the smaller towns like say Fullerton or Yuerba Buena will answer not with the city name but with Orange County if asked.

Anaheim the Orange County city of Los Angeles.…

I used to think anything south of the grapevine and north of San Diego was LA until I moved to Orange County. To answer your question more specifically, If I am overseas or sometimes back East I will say LA because no one knows where Bakersfield or Mission Viejo is. If I am on the west coast I am more specific.

No, Norwallk is not L.A. proper. It is in L.A. county, but that does mean a lot for a county that includes and island. I wouldn’t call Catalina L.A.

PupnTaco's avatar

Yeah but Norwalk is east L.A.-ish. I know, I recovered a stolen car there in college.

I used to live in Norwack, oops I mean Norwalk. It is not Los Angeles. It’s almost the O.C.

I know people who lived in Bakersfield and said they lived in L.A, I think they were ashamed and just wanted to feel cool ;]

The O.C.? Isn’t that a TV show?

I do not know about Anaheim or Norwalk, but I would not say with any pride that I was from Los Angeles. Gertrude Stein famously said of Oakland that “there is no there there,” but she could easily have said that of L.A. There is no real center to the city. It is one non-ending sprawl. My apologies to residents of L.A.; no personal offense intended. I have family in Woodland Hills who think that it is just a wonderful place to live. If you want to exchange barbs about Philadelphia, which I live outside of, you are at a disadvantage. There is nothing that you can say that local residents don’t already say of themselves. Philadelphians have this weird love-hate relationship with their home city.

tinyfaery's avatar

Well I do. So just stay where you are.

@LostInParadise; so, by your username, you really are lost if you don’t know that Southern California IS paradise!

I live in Somerville, Massachusetts. When I talk to people from the area, I say I’m from Somerville (and, often, that I live in Porter Square). When I talk to people from outside New England, I say I’m from Boston. It saves me having to explain where Somerville is.
