Do you think dancing is a "vertical expression of a horizontal desire" when you get right down to it?

Some people, yes. Some people, no. Sometimes I’m just showing off that I can move! Seriously, if you put on a great old dance hit that I like, say, The Groove Line by Heatwave, I’m not even thinking about doing the do. I’m just all ooot!-ooot! ::spin:: ooot! ooot! ::shimmy::

@aprilsimnel now i’m thinking about….doh.

@ april, “ooot!-ooot! ::spin:: ooot! ooot! ::shimmy”? I’m not sure, but I think you just had an orgasm.

Of course it can be, but there are many forms of dance that aren’t about mating. It depends on context, and the rules, written or unwritten, of that space. If it’s in a club, most likely it’s about struttin’ yo’ stuff. It happened a lot at Woodstock. It can happen at raves, although I suppose, for almost all these sites, it depends on how much alcohol and drugs you’ve consumed.

Ballroom dance is fairly chaste, though it does have a component of sexuality, especially the latin dances. Ballet? Uh-uh. Similarly, I doubt that anything Merce Cunningham does will be considered as displaying flagrant sexual desires. There are so many other forms, one can’t discuss them all. I do think that African dance and dance descended from it is pretty sexual. Many of the courtly Asian dances seem anything but.

It’s definitely a great way to flirt and convey ‘horizontal desire,’ but I definitely don’t want to sleep with everyone I dance with. I dance with my friends too…

Mr_M's avatar

Er, why do you call yourself “Tits”?

Vinifera7's avatar

No, I think it’s a vertical expression of the music. If it was as just about conveying sexual interest, then you shouldn’t need music in order to do it.

i think dance is a courting ritual that can at times be representative of sex

It is kind of like asking whether a great painting of a nude is about sex. Well of course it is, but it also transcends sex. If the purpose were to bring about arousal then it would be pornography, not art. It is the same with dance. It can have sexaul components. In tango, for example, eye contact can be employed in a flirtatious manner. But in the end, if done right, it transcends sex just as great art does. It is a little difficult to explain if you have not experienced it.

I’ve heard this before, but I don’t really believe it.

Mr_M's avatar

Then, “Wanna dance?” (hehehe)

Bust a move!

No. Dancing is far more than that. It is art, it is grace, it is a poem, it is joy. Where is the vertical expression of horizontal desire in the Firebird? or in a tap dance solo or a thousand other forms of dance?

Mr_M's avatar

@Allie, I warn you. I have big feet!!!

Allie's avatar

All that matters is if you know how to use them.

It can be an expression of sex, but it can also be an expression of community, or simply the sheer exhilaration of moving (think young children jumping through a garden sprinkler)... or it can be for internal peace (think tai chi)...

@Mr_M: I answered this in another thread, but it’s pretty much in reference to a nickname I had at a job at a pizzeria, which was taken from Anchorman. I do have rather pronounced, erm, tracts of land.

NTP's avatar

No, it can be developed into part of the rituals of courting but I doubt there is a valid direct link between dance and sex.

Who said this ?? “Dancing is a vertical expression of a horizontal desire.” or “Dancing: The vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalized by music.”

George Bernard Shaw ??

Robert Frost??
