have you tried updating itunes, doing a reset of the ipod (hold down middle and top button simultaneously) and also try restarting.

does it mount in disk utility?
try putting it in disk mode
reset using menu and center buttons
when the apple appears hold previous and center
plug it in

As @c_gunningham said, restart it while it’s pulled into the computer.

I had this EXACT same problem with my 2nd Gen a few months ago. After an ipod “genius” told me it was beyond help, I tried what c. gunningham suggested

[holding down the middle and menu buttons at the same time, while plugged into the computer, and keep holding them both down until the black screen with the silver apple appears]

and now it’s works perfectly again!

My iTunes is the newest version. (8.1) My Apple Software updates were completed today. My iPod’s backlight lights up when I plug it in, but no sync symbol appears… iTunes doesn’t change in the least… and it’s doesn’t show up on the desktop. It doesn’t even charge.

I tried the reseting suggestions, but I still got the same problem.

Does it show up as an attached device in system profiler?

@writerini: Did you keep holding the buttons down until you saw the apple logo with the black backgroud on your ipod screen?

@La_chica_gomela Yup. It still doesn’t work.

Okay.

My only other suggestions would be:

-Calling the apple store and setting up an appointment. You might get someone with more know-how than Mr. “Well, you can buy a refurb. one for $60…” They usually see you within the week, and they’ll look at it for free, whether it’s still under warranty or not.

-You might also look on apple’s support pages. They have customer forums divided by device/generation with a lot of helpful suggestions.
